Weather:
Today started out looking like a winter wonderland, with snow covered trees and fields. Temps were also on the wintry side, hovering right at the freezing mark all day. Winds were light and a little variable but mostly from the north. Skies remained cloudy for the day with the occasional patch of blue opening up momentarily. Visibility was the best of the season so far, and I was able to count windows on Halfway Rock Lighthouse which is 18.5 Miles away.
Raptor Observations:
It was a slow day but we were able to put some birds on the board. With the help of the clear viewing conditions I was able to pick up a distant Sharpy as it took a stab at one of the local Coops on its way by. A couple of small jabs to a slipping and weaving Coop and the Sharpy was on its way. Local Eagles were pretty active today but remained mostly in place not traveling to far afield. The afternoon was a bit more productive than the morning with a couple more male Harriers and a few Osprey to finish out the day. A couple raptors were seen moving south today including 2 Kestrels and an immature or female Harrier.
Non-raptor Observations:
Not a lot of northbound movement today, with a lot more birds seen flying to the south. Southbound birds included: 948 American Robins 12 Evening Grosbeaks (First of Season) 5 Duck Spp. 4 Common Mergansers 4 Red-winged Blackbirds 4 Common Grackles 3 Brown Headed Cowbirds 2 American Kestrels 1 Northern Harrier One other bird of note was the sites first Double-crested Cormorant, headed north.
Predictions:
Tomorrow doesn't look too terribly bad but not quite what we're after for this time of year. Winds will be mostly from the NW at about 8-12mph. Temps should be a little more comfortable than today, in the high 40s along with plenty of sunshine.
