Re: [Maine-birds] Lesser Black Backed Gulls

It seems there has been an unprecedented movement of adult LBBGs this month.   Nathan Dubrow reported a peak of 140 (!) at Mt Desert Rock on the 5th, and Ed Jenkins had 31 the same evening at Pine Point Jetty in Scarborough.  In addition, there has been a variety of counts of 1 to 5 elsewhere.  I had 15 just this morning at Pine Point.  In any other year I would have doubted my identification skills if I thought I was seeing this many!  The previous high fall count reported in Jeff's good account in BoME was only 5!

What on earth can be going on?

When I wrote the Lesser Black-backed Gull account for Birds of Maine, I discovered through eBird records that the peak of Lesser Black-backed Gull migration through Maine was in September as you guys have been noting! Apparently most of these birds are originating from an expanding breeding population in Greenland.
