[Maine-birds] Eurasian Marsh-Harrier

Hello all,

It sounds like the harrier may have drifted away from Weskeag Marsh. Are there still eyes on the marsh and is the bird still foraging there?

[Maine-birds] EURASIAN MARSH-HARRIER - North Haven, 25 Aug

This morning (25 August), Byron Swift found a female Eurasian Marsh-Harrier at Fresh Pond on North Haven. The bird was first seen around 8AM but was not seen again during the hour when Byron looked at ~11AM.

Here is a link to Byron's eBird list, with photos: https://ebird.org/checklist/S117527547

If anyone is interested in looking tomorrow, I've got a few spots saved on a boat out to North Haven, departing from Rockland at 6:30AM. We'll need to take the ferry back, and we're still figuring out transportation on the island, but if anyone is interest let me know and I can share details.

Good birding,

Doug Hitchcox

[Maine-birds] Re: woodcock or snipe migrating? Probably woodcock "commuting" to nocturnal roosts

Thanks to a couple readers who responded to my query.
What is starting to make sense to me is that they were woodcock and they were heading out of their daytime haunts in the alder thickets and wetland woods habitat in the lowlands to the blueberry barrens behind the house we were visiting for their evening/night roosting. I found this interesting article about woodcock commuting from rich daytime feeding areas to nighttime roosts to lower their risk of predation.  Also this timber doodle.org summary describes the nightly commute in northern areas from mid-July until migration.  It was a privilege to look up and see them in that brief moment of time :)

Sunday evening, August 21, well after sunset on a high point near Rockport, we had 6-8 individual birds fly over our heads, on a generally north to south trajectory. They were not very high over our heads. They were not exactly flying together, in a flock. But they were basically flying the same trajectory and close in time to each other. I did see four at once, following close upon each other.
We could only see silhouettes. They looked like woodcock or snipe. They were a bit chunky, had long slender bills and their wings made a soft whirring sound. They did not vocalize at all.
Do either/both of those species migrate in loose aggregates?
Are they migrating now?
Anyone else seeing them?
Also saw nighthawks Saturday late afternoon in Whitefield :)
Always good to see them.

[Maine-birds] Brooksville= 3 pileated woodpeckers on our Popple tree 3/23/22

Saw  3 Pileated Woodpeckers at once on two of our Popples--working their way up the trunk.  Just a bit smaller than a full-grown Pileated, so my guess is they are this year's nest mates.  Quite exciting!

Re: [Maine-birds] woodcock or snipe migrating?

I flushed a woodcock in my yard on Sunday. First here since late
March. The usual pattern here is March/April then September/October.
Typically singles.

[Maine-birds] Bird Monitoring August 27 at Scarborough Marsh

Please join us on August 27 at 7 am at Scarborough Marsh for a marsh-wide survey of birds to document the numbers of individuals and species.  Timed to catch the beginning of shorebird migration, each group of monitors will be assigned a portion of the marsh to survey.  Depending on the assignment, surveys may be done on foot, by car or from a canoe (provided at the marsh or bring your own).

The morning will start with a brief introduction to the marsh and the survey methods.  After that, monitors will disperse to their assigned sections, and actual surveys may last up to several hours (depending on location surveyed).  If people need to leave early we can make sure they are in a location that can accommodate that. Refreshments are provided.

Here in Nobleboro both the red-breasted and white-breasted have been at the sunflower seed all year.

What is new, is that a few Black Capped Chickadees returned yesterday.

[Maine-birds] Re: Bald Blue Jays- Liberty

Collin here in Camden. We have two blue jays and once cardinal at our feeder with the same molding state. Noticed it about 10 days ago. I was worried about disease but found a couple of resources that said it was common especially in August.  One of the blue jays has shown some growth over the last week, more than the other anyway. The cardinal (if it's indeed the same bird we keep seeing) is still very bald. It's also how i learned that cardinals have black skin.

[Maine-birds] White Ibis. Monday 8/15/22. Late pm.

Viewed 3 in a tree on the north side of Harbor Road. A birder found them for us and took photos on my camera.  (A Canon Power Shot SX60 HS.) They flew down behind trees, then we observed 5 of them flying across the road to the south side. No photo of that. We could see them farther out in the marsh, too far for good views with only bins.

Hearty thank you to Ben, the birder who found them and took the photos.

I didn't see them reported on eBird, which I don't input to.

[Maine-birds] Washington Co. Nelson's Sparrow 15 August

Just before six o'clock 15 August Wally and I saw a Nelson's Sparrow along with two Solitary Sandpipers and a Lesser Yellow-legs at the stinky little tidal inlet where Cow Point Road and Johnson Cove Road meet. It was an immature, I think. The photos are posted on both eBird and iNaturalist, where you can correct me if I've made a mistake.  This brackish area has had both Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, and a Kingfisher recently.

[Maine-birds] WB Nuthatch

I have what looks to be a very old or very young White-breasted Nuthatch who's attached to my magnum feeder as if it were feeding but he's just sitting there hanging sideways. I approached to the point were I could grab it if I desired. It didn't move. It's eyes are closed and was not alerted to me being inches from him. I'm guessing I should just do nothing but if I can help it I would like to for it's my nature. If anyone has idea please email me sooner than later. Thank you all.

Re: [Maine-birds] WHITE IBIS (15!!!) - Wells, 11 Aug

Hi all,
As of noon, there were at least 26 present in the area. A "Patagonia Picnic Table" effect has so far produced an immature Yellow-crowned Night-Heron and a MARBLED GODWIT - both first spotted by Luke Seitz.

[Maine-birds] White Ibis at Drakes Island

I saw a report on Maine Birds FB grp. that was reported at Drakes Island yesterday.  Originally posted as a Glossy Ibis, but it's an immature White ibis.

[Maine-birds] Little Blue Heron, Cherryfield

There is an immature Little Blue Heron in the Narraguagus River, c. 60-70 yards north of the Rte. 1 (lower) bridge. All-white, roughly the size of a Snowy Egret, but thicker, shorter, neck, greenish legs, and bluish bill with dark tip. Never thought I'd see one here.

[Maine-birds] Re: Wilson’s Phalarope

After further review of this photo and discussion with Eddy Edwards … we are now leaning toward a Red-necked Phalarope.  I've never seen a Ref-necked except far out at sea but the Sibley's photos match up.

Thoughts anyone?
