[Maine-birds] Redpolls

Was surprised to find a large flock of redpolls , with a few goldfinches, on one of the Rines wetland trails this morning. Feeding on birch catkins between the trail and the frozen over bog (mostly frozen, managed to put one boot through it). Busy, chatty birds in single digit weather.

Re: [Maine-birds] Re: Pigeons

I definitely chose the feral option - so they must just have a bug in the new system.  I thought it was faintly ridiculous to justify my 13 pigeon count for FeederWatch ;)

Fwd: [Maine-birds] Bar Graph style checklists

I suspect all of you are familiar with the checklist style which uses a  bar of variable thickness across a year to show the approximate abundance of each species by month. I am trying to discover when this style was invented and first used for birds. I am aware of two Chester Reed books from 1912 which uses this style. Does anyone know of any earlier for any location? I suspect these exist back hundreds of years for plants but maybe not. Anyone know of uses in the 1800s or earlier?
Thanks.

Have had a regular flock of 5-20 Siskins this year in Liberty. Also regular Goldfinches but usually <10, compared to higher numbers of Goldfinches last year. I had not had a Siskin in 7-8 years until this year. Happy to see them!

Re: [Maine-birds] Turkey Vultures

re: Turkey Vultures / Birds of Maine book

In my newly-arrived Birds of Maine book, the section on Turkey Vultures gives detailed citations about the increase in wintering birds, with the first one reported in 1981.
It was also interesting to read that there is a pattern showing that the Turkey Vultures arriving in spring migration are arriving earlier each year.  For example the first spring migrants would arrive in April-May before 1987, with the dates becoming earlier as the years went on.  By 2012 there were 10 reports prior to February 15, including one reported in Bath on February 5, 2012.
Thank you, Tom, for letting us all know about the availability of Birds of Maine through the Princeton sale.  It's a great book --- all seven pounds of it!

[Maine-birds] Re: Information about using the path at Flying Point Preserve to see the eagle.

It depends where the bird is whether closer looks are gotten from the Rte 127 bridge or from the path leading to the FPP.  That said, we were there yesterday and were able to see the bird quite well from that path (and I know that it was not visible from the bridge at that time since someone next to us was communicating with a friend on the bridge who could not see the bird), with even better views if one followed the path through the preserve to its end. It was definitely very muddy with some large puddles but that would vary based on temperature (yesterday was pretty warm). The road itself is smooth going albeit muddy but turns to uneven stones and roughness on the path. I did see a few individuals with walking sticks navigating slowly but ably. The path is not particularly narrow and people cede way where necessary. Don't know about how the tide would affect the area. There were many cars parked along the road but there is a Y very close to where one takes the path down to the marsh and I'd recommend driving past the Y to park so you're closer to the path. The Y also gives you a good opportunity to turn around. There's no missing the path although I don't actually remember seeing any markers.
I hope this helps, and happy birding!

From the reports, it seems as though some birders have been able to get a closer look at the Steller's eagle by using the path in FPP up the river from the bridge.
Is that true or is the bird about equal distance from this viewing area as it is from the bridge?
Could someone who has walked that path please describe the condition and/or challenges of the path out to the viewing area.
Easy walking?
Muddy needing boots?
Smooth footing to rough going?
Narrow or wide foot area  (maybe needing a walking stick for those not so agile)?
I think I recall someone mentioning to avoid the area at high tide because of one low area that could present a problem?  Is that correct?
How far can one drive in on what looks like a narrow road?
Is the road wide enough to pass someone going the other way?  I am sure there is a lot of traffic on it.
Is the path well marked so one can easily find it and their way to the marsh area where folks have been viewing the bird?
Any other information that would help folks decide if trying to view the bird from that area would be doable for them?

Thanks in advance for answers to my many questions.
Happy birding,
Marie

Anyone else getting duplicate emails from mainebirds?  I've been getting 2 identical emails from each person who has posted info about Turkey Vultures.

Should I extend my greetings to the NSA?

[Maine-birds] Me & the Stellar's Sea Eagle

It was later in the day yesterday and I had heard the eagle was in view at Frying Pt. Preserve. I got there & parked behind 27 cars, I counted. Then walked a mile almost to the spot when everyone came walking towards me. Needless to say it took flight southish up river. So I walked all the way back, almost to the beginning and took the other fork in the trail up river. Two gentlemen from NY joined me. They had seen the bird fly off and were going to leave but the thought of a 5hr drive back made them delay. So we walked a mile or so when I saw a beat up path on the left side that was somewhat close to the river. I told them I was going to check the river area & they decided not to join me & went on. I got to the marshy shore of the river and set up my scope. As I scanned the opposite side of the river I got to a point across from me and about 150 yards away, up in big pine sat the Stellar's Sea Eagle!! I couldn't believe it. While it wasn't ideal for photos, I did have a perfect, unobstructed view of the bird through the scope. I watched it watch the river for a half hour or so til it got to dark.  I could hear only the cracking of the ice, a distant goose here and there & the wings of ducks as the flew off to roost. No voices or traffic could be heard. This was a moment in time unlike any other in my life. A moment mere words couldn't possibly accurately convey.
