[Maine-birds] Raven

Saw a raven flying right over our car, Cumberland County. Heard it calling the day before in a wooded area. Suburbia. Surprised to see it here.

[Maine-birds] RFI - Short-billed Dowitcher banding projects?

Hi all - I observed a metal-banded Short-billed Dowitcher (R leg above the tarsus) this morning at Lopaus Point on MDI, and wonder if anyone on the listserv is aware of current / recent banding projects that might be the source. No code was readable on the band, but the migration data might still be useful to that researcher.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Re: [Maine-birds] Tropical Kingbird photo

Steve,

The Tropical Kingbird was first reported via Facebook as a Western Kingbird. That said it was quickly sorted out but not posted to this Google group. (The recent Ferruginous Hawk and Anhinga have been, however.) You can read my notes with the presumed first date of the kingbird, 19 June(!!) with the name of the finder in my checklist for 18 July. I have some photos there and notes what I think is the origin of the bird from a southern, migratory population of Tropical Kingbird in southern South America.
https://ebird.org/checklist/S187601689

Although the Bird Observer site breaks down the eBird rarities by county, it might be easier and simpler to go to the Maine eBird rare bird alert from which those lists are generated. You can sort by date (default), location, or county. You don't need an eBird account or any sign up or sign in to see the list.

I subscribed to this list for the general backyard bird chatter and am not apt to chase after rarities. For me a picture or description taken by others is just fine and keeps my electric bill down.

You should realize though that both this listserve and the Maine Rare Bird Alert GroupMe do require a signup as does viewing facebook video content.

Steve and all,

Although I don't want to discourage anyone from reading my blog, it is probably not the best place for the most current rarity news. As I chase much less and less, I try to focus more on seasonal context and overviews of "what's happening." I mostly do this as an organization of my field notes for myself, but I am always happy to hear when others mention they find it of value.  Not that I am not up for a good "twitch" now and again - especially for a state bird - but it's a much smaller part of my birding interests these days and therefore current rarities are not always reflected there.

However, perhaps a better resource for immediate rarity news is the aggregation of outlets on our website: www.freeportwildbirdsupply.com

Scroll down to the bottom, and you can see links to the archives of primary sources of birding info these days: the Maine Rare Bird Alert GroupMe, eBird, and this Listserve. I rarely if ever use those modern groups, so the archive of my blog is there as well for my own stuff. You can access each of them without signing up. You can also see our Facebook feed (without being "on Facebook," which is more current than my summary blogs.

[Maine-birds] Monhegan Island sightings and presentation July 19-20

Two days on the island to give a presentation (see video link below) for the Monhegan Associates on The Birds of Monhegan provided some notable sightings, as well as illustrating how little coverage the island receives in summer, compared to spring and fall. Birding focused on seawatching at Lobster Cove/Point in the early morning and the way there, stops at the Ice Pond and the Meadow, and a loop to White Head that included Long Swamp and Cathedral Woods.

Highlights included:
Blue-winged Teal - 10 at the Ice Pond both days (1 adult female and 9 mostly grown juveniles).
Virginia Rail - 1 seen on an exposed mud flat in the Meadow on the 19th.
Solitary Sandpiper - 1 at the Ice Pond on the 19th - record early (previous July 26).
Spotted Sandpiper - 1 at Lobster Cove on the 20th.
Least Sandpiper - 1 heard at the Meadow on the 19th.
Lesser Yellowlegs - 1 flyover on the 20th.
Greater Yellowlegs - 1 flyover with Lesser Yellowlegs on the 20th.
Atlantic Puffin - 14 flybys at Lobster Point on the 19th, 45 on the 20th (record high count).
Black Guillemot - concentrations at the north end of Manana both days: 60 on the 19th, 50 on the 20th.
Razorbill - 2 flybys at Lobster Point on the 19th.
Arctic Tern - 1 flyby at Lobster Point on both days.
Common Tern - 52 on the 20th, most feeding near Eastern Duck Rock (record high count)
Manx Shearwater - 1 flyby at Lobster Point on the 20th.
Osprey - flyover on the 19th.
Baltimore Oriole - 1 along road between Trailing Yew and Lobster Cove Trail on both days.
Rose-breasted Grosbeak - 2 along road between Monhegan House and Brewery on both days.
Many other expected species heard or seen. A Great Shearwater was seen on the ferry back to Port Clyde on the 20th. No gannets seen.

Continued updates of notable Monhegan Island sightings, especially those supplementing those presented in the book, can be viewed at The Birds of Monhegan Facebook Page - https://www.facebook.com/groups/778377796965411  These sightings should be added in the next few days. Please share your sightings or photos from the island!

The Monhegan Associates Ecology Lecture Series presentation can be viewed at https://monheganassociates.org/ecology-lecture-series/  Please be sure to support them for all they do to preserve, restore and maintain the wonderful habitat on the island, to the benefit of the birds and birders.

Don't have a copy of the book? You can purchase the softcover at www.BirdsofMonhegan.com, several locations on the island, and other select bookstores. Limited edition signed and numbered hardcover editions can be purchased directly from me at the contact info below.

[Maine-birds] ANHINGA - Somerville, 23-24 Jul

Crossposting from the Maine Rare Bird Alert GroupMe that an ANHINGA was found yesterday by Tabatha Holt in Somerville, and is still being seen today (24 Jul). Here is the access info I shared in that group:

The Anhinga is in a flooded meadow on the east side of Hewett Road in Somerville, about 0.4 miles north of Route 17. This is a narrow dirt road and visitors need to be very cautious of their speed (25 mph) and not to trespass on either end of the location. Recommended parking is on the east side of Hewett Road, starting near the little island of pines, here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/E5hCHWmciLByP7KD7 and continuing north. Please do not park past the first telephone pole south of this pin, or go beyond the two north of here. There should be space for ~10 cars at a time, so please don't stay too long and do your best to carpool. Again, make sure you do not block traffic and beware of the deep culvert on the opposite side of the road.

Info on joining the GroupMe is available here: https://tinyurl.com/MaineRBAGroupMeRules

[Maine-birds] RFI -- Red Crossbill Feeding Observations

Hi all,

I'm writing with my late summer request for observations of red crossbills foraging on conifers. Now is the time when cone crops on many conifers are starting to mature, so crossbills could be gearing up to breed if there is a decent cone crop near you.

As a reminder: I'm looking for recordings of red crossbill calls from the eastern US/Great Lakes with information on the conifers the birds are feeding on. The recordings do not have to be made with any advanced equipment -- most phone recordings are sufficient. Pictures of the conifer cones are most helpful. However, if you are comfortable with conifer identification, notes on which conifers birds are feeding on are also valuable.

I also wrote a short update on the project and the 2023-2024 "conifer season" on the iNaturalist page for this project (link here). We are quickly approaching 1,000 observations, and this past year was a very interesting one!

Many thanks to everyone who has contributed!

Best,
Dr. Cody Porter
