[Maine-birds] Shorebirds and Gulls at Biddeford

Mark Rolerson and I had a good day in Biddeford today, Monday, Sept. 16, 2024. the highlight was one Western Sandpiper on South Point.

At South Point Sanctuary a half hour after high tide, we saw a large flock of shorebirds frantically feeding in the mounds of wrack right at the waterline.
Rough estimates:
Semipalmated Sandpipers  250
Semipalmated Plovers 150
Sanderlings 50
White rumped Sandpipers 10
Least Sandpipers 5
Dunlin 5
Black Bellied Plover 2
Western Sandpiper 1 (much longer bill than surrounding semipalmated sandpipers with slight droop at tip, rufous V on upper scapulars contrasting with gray lower scapulars)

Three hours after high tide at Hills Beach and the Basket Island Causeway we saw the following:
Many Herring, Great Black Backed and Ring Billed Gulls
Black Bellied Plover 50
Dowitcher sp (probably short billed) 40
Red Knot (immatures with scaly scapulars) 20
Lesser Black Backed Gulls  7 (adult)
Dunlin 1
