En route to West Quoddy Head lighthouse we stopped to look at large flocks of gulls. But overhead was a greater show! In every direction we looked, Bald Eagles were soaring or perched. There were at least 41 eagles that we could see at once, but we know there were more as we could see birds soaring over Campobello and Quoddy Head. From the South Lubec Road we scoped two sand/gravel bars in the bay and counted 22 Bald Eagles (only 4 were adults). Actually, the majority of birds we saw this morning were immatures. There was a lot of interaction among the eagles - lots of "talon-touching"!! Also, circling with the soaring eagles were gulls, ravens and crows. We saw a Sharp-shinned Hawk harassing a raven!
Is there a major eagle wintering roost in that area or is this unusual? We've never seen this many eagles before in this area. Anybody know anything about it?
Of interest from Quoddy Head we saw 15 Purple Sandpipers, 3 Black-legged Kittiwakes and a first-year Iceland Gull.
