[Maine-birds] Additional Highlights This Week and Goose Fields Update, 11/16-22

Hi all,

Just a couple of additional notes from the past seven days which found me busier than the birding:

- 58+ Horned Larks and 1 Snow Bunting, Mayall Road, Gray/New Gloucester, 11/16 (with Saturday Morning Birdwalk group).

- Up to 4 Chipping Sparrows, here at the store, 11/16-present. One adult arrived on 11/16, grew to FOUR (three adults, 1 first-winter) on 11/18, and one adult continues through this afternoon.

- 1 continuing female BLACK SCOTER, 1 continuing female SURF SCOTER, 38 Greater Scaup, 31 Lesser Scaup, etc, Lake Auburn, Auburn, 11/21 (with Dan Nickerson).

- 1 Lapland Longspur, 100 Snow Buntings, and 8 Horned Larks, Mayall Road, Gray/New Gloucester, 11/21 (with Dan Nickerson).

- 23 American Coots and 68 Ruddy Ducks Prout's Pond, Scarborough, 11/22.

- 5 American Wigeons, 2 American Coots, 2 Lesser Scaup, and 1 Greater Scaup, Grondin Pond, Scarborough, 11/22.

- 2 Black-bellied Plovers and 5 Snow Buntings, Ferry Beach, Scarborough, 11/22.

- 6 continuing LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 2 continuing WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, 1 continuing Greater Yellowlegs, 158 Dunlin, 10 Horned Larks, 1 Peregrine Falcon, etc, Eastern Road Trail, Scarborough Marsh, 11/22.

- scattered Fox Sparrows at various locations this week.

- a handful of scattered Red-winged Blackbirds and Common Grackles.

"Greater Yarmouth Goose Fields" Update:

Still no rarities...sigh. Good numbers of Canada Geese continue however, with a high count this week of 876 on 11/20.

[Maine-birds] Snowy Owl @ Mt A

The owl moved from the platform and just spent from 1:30-2:30 on the Blueberry Bluff sign to the left as you approach the parking lot on top.

[Maine-birds] another snowy owl

At the risk of "piling on", there was a young Snowy Owl perched on a rock farther offshore than the Fox Islands (off Popham Beach) this late morning. Ran into Don Reimers there and he and I got unsatisfactory (distant) looks. This bird is much darker on the chest than the face. Where it will settle remains to be seen.

Isn't it great when this flurry of Snowy Owl sightings happens?

Also at Popham (or nearby) this morning:

- an adult "Tundra" Peregrine Falcon, perched more than an hour on piece of driftwood

- 40 Horned Larks dragging around at least one L Longspur. Also 3 Ipswich Sparrows.

- A Black-headed Gull, sort of next to a flock of 35 Bonies, feeding on zooplankton

- 152 Dunlins in Spirit Pond

- A solo Lesser Scaup at Alliquippa

- a huge, building flock of Am Robins circulating between Bald Head and Small Point.

Actually a pretty good morning of birding, in this sketchy weather. I elected to leave my new camera in the truck, due to nearly constant driz.

Great tip! Playing the movie at the lower right ("last full day" but it seems just this morning actually) is worthwhile. Make sure to expand the movie by clicking the arrows at the right.

The Snowy Owl first appears on the platform at 07:24 this morning and stays there until 10:13, when some humans ascend the platform. After they leave, the bird returns 25 minutes later at 10:38 and remains on perch up to now. Very cool!! If you don't like cool, then try this webcam: http://sabalpalmsanctuary.org/feedercam/ I just got two Green Jays, four (oh, make that five) Plain Chachalacas, and a Snowy Owl within seconds of each other by switching windows.
