[Maine-birds] WHITE WAGTAIL in Rye, NH - YES!!!

The White Wagtail discovered by Josh Gahagan was seen and photographed
by many birders late this afternoon. It was feeding in the rocks along
the north side of the Ragged Neck picnic area of Rye Harbor State Park
in Rye, NH. This is adjacent to an area of washed up wrack and sea
weeds. There was abundant insect activity and the bird was very active
feeding in this area just on the north side of the phragmites stand. It
continued in this area until it started getting very dark (roughly 5:30
PM) and then spontaneously flew up high into the air and disappeared
toward the southwest in the direction of Rye Harbor boat launch.

It is hoped that perhaps it went to a roost spot. If so, it may come
back to feed in this area tomorrow morning. If not, then it may be gone
for good.

The identification, as far as I know, (ie. not much) is still White
Wagtail, although Pied Wagtail, apparently now a ssp. of White Wagtail
(????) is being discussed.

MANY THANKS to Josh for finding this bird and for him and Katie Towler
for getting the word out. It is truly amazing how many birders got this
bird considering the late afternoon discovery, and how short the days
are now.

My grainy photos in very low light as follows. Others will likely be
much better:

[Maine-birds] Red Crossbills in Machiasport

We did some exploring at the Long Point Preserve in Machiasport and heard, then saw, a flock of about 25 Red Crossbills - a first-of-the-season for us.  This preserve seems pretty birdy with nice viewing spots for sea ducks and raptors.  It is owned by the Maine Coast Heritage Trust.

Re: [Maine-birds] Female Blue Grosbeak Currently At The Dragonfields

I stopped by to look for the Blue Grosbeak today. No luck on that, but I did see this Northern Parula at the parking area around noon.

Sorry for not adding directions earlier. I've had several people ask so here they are:

Dragon Fields is also known as the "Old City Landfill" in Portland on the west side of Route 9, almost directly across from Presumpscot Street. It has acquired the "Dragon Fields" name because of the Dragon Cement factory and lime stone quarry that abuts the field where the landfill was. The parking for this location is the same as that used for the Quarry Run Dog Park, which is worth mentioning because there are usually a lot of dogs here (including some uncomfortably inquisitive pooches this evening).

The Blue Grosbeak was lingering in the southeast corner of the field, right at the edge of the quarry. The bird was ridiculously tame, even oblivious to some of the dogs that were constantly passing through.

Here is the eBird hotspot for Dragon Fields which can help with directions and updated sightings: http://ebird.org/ebird/hotspot/L458836

Hope this helps,

[Maine-birds] Protect Monhegan

Hi all,

Since many of you know and love the birds and birding on Monhegan Island, I thought it was important to share an update here. As you know, an industrial wind power development is being proposed for just offshore of the island, potentially putting thousands of birds at risk. A community group, Protect Monhegan has formed to oppose the placement of the project. In order to keep this post short, I'll direct you to my blog, where I posted the press release from the new organization, along with some links - from a birders' perspective - for those who would like to learn more and show their support.

Thank you for your time and consideration,
Derek

[Maine-birds] Couple seasonal rarities at Sanford Lagoons

On the Maine Audubon today, I recorded 36 different species with many different duck species present. Highlights (for me) were Ruddy Ducks, Common Goldeneye, Northern Pintail, and a Lesser Scaup. We also found a lone Common Yellowthroat and 3 Northern Shovelers which are both seasonal rarities (though I don't blame them for sticking around it was over 50 degrees out at 8 am).

Here's my ebird checklist:  http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/email?subID=S32337518

[Maine-birds] Snow Geese in Fryeburg Harbor

This morning are 6 snow geese on Harbor Road, including a "blue goose." They are in a field on the north side of the road.

Not far up the road from there are 40 horned larks feeding in a newly turned field, on the south side of the road.

Location is on Harbor Road, between Old River Road and Rt 113.
