[Maine-birds] Spear Farm migrants

The migration switch officially flipped, at least in the southern part of the state. I birded Spear Farm Estuary Preserve in Yarmouth this morning. An actual flock of warblers to sort through, primarily Yellow-rumps, along with Pine, Palm, Black-and-White Warblers, and Blue-headed Vireo.

[Maine-birds] Ovenbird, Northern Parula, and other new arrivals (Biddeford)

Brad Moser and I went on a walk around Proctor Road in Biddeford this morning before work and counted 38 species. There was definitely a nice influx of new migrants last night on the warm front. Our FOY highlights included:

Yellow-rumped Warbler (many! over 20 counted)

Ovenbird

Black-and-white Warbler

Northern Parula

Blue-headed Vireo

Barn Swallow

Savannah Sparrow (around a dozen)

I'm sure others got good birds on this fine morning!

[Maine-birds] Wolf's Neck

Well, all three Osprey nests are occupied. Two have sitting females, the third is thinking about it. There was also a plethora if Eiders and a large smattering of Red-breasted Mergansers (those are my scientific calculations). One Loon and one noisy Pileated.

Weather:
The day started out rather cool, but climbed into the high 50's by mid day. Winds were mostly light, and variable for most of the day, with the exception of the 2-3 EST hour, when winds picked up from the SE. Clouds remained scattered, with more clearing later in the day.

Raptor Observations:
I was a little worried how the day would turn out, after only having one bird in the first hour. Things picked up and remained steady, with one small lull in the action. Birds were gaining quite a lot of elevation during the midday hours. 3 Eagles got into a tussle with a pair of Broad-wings, right around the summit, diving on one another and vocalizing. My day was finally completed after the official count period, when Dave Fensore spotted a Grey Ghost, an adult male Northern Harrier. Our only one of the day.

Non-raptor Observations:
32 Species were seen or heard today. Other species migrating north included: 131 Double-crested Cormorants 15 Tree Swallows 3 Barn Swallows 2 Common Loons 2 Great-blue Herons 1 Common Merganser

Predictions:
Tomorrow is shaping up nicely. Temps in the high 70's, and possibly 80's will feel like an abrupt change. The best part however, may be the predicted SW winds for the entire day, at around 10-15 mph. Clouds could be hard to find, which also means more difficulty in spotting birds, but this is looking pretty good for a decent flight.
