[Maine-birds] Glossy Ibis

Fairly large flock of glossy ibis yesterday afternoon (60+) in a muddy cow pasture on Rt 9 (Hallowell Rd), just south of Loring Ln. north of Royal Rd. in Pownal. I'm a recent midwest transplant, been here just two weeks and have only done backyard birding in Maine, so I was a little startled, having seen them only tropically in the past. (I see the earlier post below.) The neighbor whose drive I pulled-off on says they've been feeding in that pasture a couple days. Nobody knew what they were; the farmer called them "mud shits!" After a while they flew off to the east, and when I re-checked just before dusk the cows had moved in.

[Maine-birds] This Week's Highlights, 6/8-14

Hi all,

My observations of note over the past seven days included the following:

- 6+ Gray Jays, 1 Olive-sided Flycatcher, etc, Boy Scout Road, Rangeley, 6/8 (with Rangeley Birding Festival tour group).

- 1 RUSTY BLACKBIRD, 1 Blackpoll Warbler (migrant?), etc, Boy Scout Road, Rangeley, 6/9 (with Rangeley Birding Festival tour group).

- 7 Upland Sandpipers, 7 Grasshopper Sparrows, 11 Vesper Sparrows, etc, Kennebunk Plains, Kennebunk, 6/10 (with Jeannette).

- 1 continuing male BLUE-WINGED WARBLER, Smutty Lane, Saco, 6/10 (with Jeannette).

- 1 continuing LITTLE EGRET, Providence Ave, Falmouth and then relocating to Tidewater Farm, Falmouth, 6/10 (with Jeannette).

- 1 continuing HYBRID TRICOLORED HERON X SMALL WHITE EGRET(S), Eastern Road Trail, Scarborough Marsh, 6/14. At this point, I think it's lineage is impossible to determine, but I wonder about Tricolored Heron x Snowy Egret x Little Egret at this point based on plumage, timeline, plumage progression, etc. Whatever...I just call it Patches II now.

- 1 Greater Yellowlegs, Eastern Road Trail, 6/14.

- 1 female PURPLE MARTIN, Dunstan Landing, Scarborough Marsh, 6/14.

[Maine-birds] Katahdin Woods & Waters, pictures, displaying male Spruce Grouse

In early June Deb and I joined a group from the Acadia Birding Festival for a two day trip to Katahdin Woods & Waters National Monument. It is a wonderful spot. Pics at my usual link: henrymauer.smugmug.com Click on 2019 albums and then on the KW&W thumbnail.

We had a wonderful show put on by a displaying male Spruce Grouse, numerous moose, and some other nice birds as well.

June 10 there were 2 Mute swans on the clam flats in Johnson Cove on Chebeague in the morning until about 10:30.

[Maine-birds] BBS Block-busting weekend - JACKMAN!

I'm looking for a few experienced birders with a sense of adventure to help me knock off a priority block or two for the Maine Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) in remote areas around Jackman. A Jackman summer resident has offered us the use of his camp on Crocker Pond, with beds (singles and pull-out sofas) to sleep six and floor space for up to four more. He has also offered his canoes and kayak to allow us to explore regions with no road access. (Please bring your own paddle and life jacket, if you are a skilled paddler who would enjoy birding via lakes and streams as well as on land.) Arrive after noon on Thursday, June 27 to get settled into the camp and plot your route. Early arrivers can start right in exploring the selected priority block on Thursday afternoon if they wish. Friday through Sunday, June 28-30, our days will start very early as we head out, either in groups of two or as individuals, to look for evidence of breeding birds in all of the different habitats within priority blocks in the Jackman grid. All meals and snacks will be provided. On Monday, July 1, we will pack up to return home – possibly with one last birding foray on the way, if time permits. If you can only come for part of the scheduled four-day time window, that's OK too – every hour of birding counts toward our goal. Interested birders can contact me offline for more details. Thanks!

[Maine-birds] Little Blue Herons in the Bunk

Spotted two adult Little Blue Herons, possibly nesting, over the weekend in the salt marsh off the Bridle Trail in Kennebunk, near the mouth of the Mousam River.
