Great sighting. Yes, this is the first record for Monhegan - no historical records. Wish we were still there.

[Maine-birds] Pemaquid swallow - just an FYI

Hi,

Around 8 am today, I spotted a swallow flying near the tip of Kresge's Point - just south of the Pemaquid lighthouse. I had only a 5 second binocular view, but noticed a compact body shape suggestive of cave swallow. The darting bird was too far away for a positive ID. Its general flight direction was northward toward Pemaquid Beach area.

[Maine-birds] Mississippi Kite - Kennebunk

This afternoon I watched a Mississippi Kite flying north to south over Parsons's Field in Kennebunk. Slate gray underneath with dark throat and dark tail suggests a female. Aside from briefly circling to gain altitude she didn't hang around.

[Maine-birds] Maine Big Sit! Weekend - Oct. 12 and 13.

Hi all! Just want to make sure people are aware that Big Sit! weekend is coming up. For those who haven't participated before, the Big Sit! is an all-day birding event where teams attempt to identify as many bird species as possible without leaving a 17-foot circle. It's birding from your backside, and it's a lot of fun.

The event is organized by Bird Watcher's Digest, and teams can register their own circles through BWD if you'd like. There are currently two registered public circles in Maine: one at Maine Audubon's Gilsland Farm in Falmouth (Oct. 12) and another run by the Merrymeeting Audubon Chapter at Wharton Point on Maquoit Bay in Brunswick (Oct. 13). If there are other registered circles, please announce yourselves!

Both of Maine Audubon's circles are FREE and open to birders of all ages and ability levels. Stop by starting at dawn on the appropriate day. Good birding!

[Maine-birds] Northern Shoveler, Monhegan, 10/1

Hi all,

For the few birders still on the island that we haven't run into today: Jeannette and I found a female NORTHERN SHOVELER on the Ice Pond this morning. This appears to be the first record for Monhegan (none in eBird and not on the Vickery checklist).

Female KING EIDER might be the only continuing rarity as of today.

No sign of the Black Skimmers, Caspian Tern, or Royal Tern as of 10:03 am at Hills Beach. Walked along the beach dow to the jetty and onto the Basket Island sandbar.
