[Maine-birds] The passing of Paul Miliotis

It is with great sadness that I report the passing of Paul Miliotis at
the age of 81.

Paul has a long history of birding in New England that dates back to
finding the famous Ross's Gull in Newburyport in 1975.  According to
Katie Towler, he loved to tell the story of how he showed Roger Tory
Peterson the gull and had his picture taken with him that appeared in
the Boston Globe....unfortunately proving to his employer that he really
wasn't sick that day!!

https://sora.unm.edu/sites/default/files/journals/nab/v029n03/p00643-p00646.pdf

Paul was a curatorial affiliate in Entomology at the Yale Peabody Museum
and a research associate in Entomology at Harvard Museum of Comparative
Zoology, and was the president of the Cambridge Entomological Club in
1976.  He has been a member of the Nuttall Ornithological Club since
1970.  He traveled all over the world leading natural history tours near
and far for Maine Audubon and Mass Audubon.  After living out of the
area for many years with a "real job" as an engineer with Northeast
Telephone and Telegraph, Paul retired and moved back to the region about
15 or 20 years ago and jumped back into birding and nature observation
in New Hampshire, Maine, and Massachusetts.  He befriended many younger
birders in recent years and has been happy to share his incredible
knowledge of nature.

He will be missed.

Yes, thanks Tom for passing this on.  At $11 a copy there's no reason not to buy 2 and donate one to your local library, and there are a bunch of other birding & nature titles including some illustrated field guides for various parts of the world.  The filter can be used for anyone who's not interested in the complete history of Czechoslovakian dinnerware, etc.

For those of you who still buy books, fabulous sale at Princeton.  Below is a message that I received from a club that I belong to.  Check it out.

Princeton University Press is having a sale right now and it includes the Birds of Maine. It's a great opportunity to purchase the most popular book that the NOC has ever (co)published, for a mere $11.25. There are some other interesting books among the sale items too.

Book Lover Sale - Feb 1-14. 75% off with code FEB75 at checkout. See our FAQ for more details.

Good birding,

You can filter the results to only scroll through the bits that interest you - and yes, thanks to Tom for posting!  I bought more than I should have.
