Re: [Maine-birds] Blue Jay imitating Broad-winged Hawk

Check the call of the red-shouldered hawk.  Broad-winged hawks have more of a whistle.

Good afternoon - a Blue Jay was recorded at a feeder making one of its typical vocalizations interspersed with clicks. At around second 23 on the recording, and again more faintly around second 27, you can make out the imitation of a Broad-winged Hawk.

Observation is from today, on the Beech Hill Road on Mt. Desert Island.

[Maine-birds] Eagles

The Pushaw Lake ice-fishing derby was held over the weekend. Lots of discarded bait and fish guts left on the ice. That explains why there are 25 bald eagles in front of my house at the north end of the lake in Hudson.

[Maine-birds] yikes, an Eastern Phoebe!

Around 4:45 this afternoon in Hallowell, I came upon an Eastern Phoebe perching on wires and deck railings at a friend's house. It was wagging its tail when perched and flew in "hawking" mode around ivy on the house walls. I can't imagine it will survive the next few weeks...
I do see that Phoebes have been seen recently in NH and a few places in the Maritimes.
