[Maine-birds] In memory of Davis Finch

A couple of weeks ago we learned the sad news of Davis Finch's death at age 86.  Steve Mirick shared more about this remarkable man and friend in this forum.

Davis was a terrific recordist of bird-sounds. His recordings--more than 1600!--are archived at Cornell's Macaulay Library. Not surprisingly, Davis wanted any contributions in his memory to be made to the Macaulay Library and for sure that's what I will do.

Use the Cornell website: birds.cornell.edu/tribute

Select "In Memoriam" button

Enter Davis Finch in the Honoree/Memorial Name field

And then proceed with the remainder of the form.

Donors can choose to enter anyone they wish to be notified of their gift.  _________________

[Maine-birds] This Week's Highlights, 11/3-11/8

It's November, and that means "Rarity Season" and unlike recent Novembers, Rarity Season is off to a roaring start. Here are my observations of note over the past 6 days. Also, there is a trip report for our 7-day birding cruise that included time in Maine waters.

[Maine-birds] Webber Pond, Bremen

Some beautifully shiny grackles flashed through two weeks ago and the starlings cleared out the feeder today. The first junco appeared on Monday and has remained in company with tufted titmice, and wb nuthatches .

Usually, I report on a range of ducks at this time of year, but I have not seen as many as usual although I have had far more mallards than usual diving off shore for acorns (which are plentiful under my oak trees this year). Four woodducks swam by last week and two buffleheads bobbed around for about an hour on Monday, but that's it.

[Maine-birds] Rufous Hummingbird - Port Clyde, 31 Oct - 3 Nov

A RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD has been coming to a feeder in Port Clyde since 31 October. It is an adult female, so the identification wasn't immediately known, but photos taken yesterday of the bird in flight were diagnostic. Today, 3 November, Scott Weidensaul visited and was able to band the bird. The homeowner, Alex Brasili, is willing to all visitors to her yard at 787 Port Clyde Road with the following requests: Please limit visitation to between 9AM and 3PM. Park in front of the garage, on the right at the top of the driveway. Be mindful while driving up that there is an older, very friendly dog on the property who "isn't always aware of cars." People are welcome to view the feeder, hanging from the south corner window, from the front lawn by the well house, or there are a couple of chairs and a table set out. On that table is also a guestbook that Alex and her partner Justin would appreciate people signing. I've set up a stakeout hotspot in eBird for this location and please consider copying this access information into your eBird lists so everyone knows these rules.

Re: [Maine-birds] Grackles and more

I've been seeing dead possums along the road lately, as well, in the Waterville/ Skowhegan area. Their population seems to be steadily increasing. I've even seen a live one on my land. I've heard they eat ticks. I hope so.

I confess I'm not a fan of Grackles but in this morning's light they were a magnificent show of iridescence. Not only that but in light of the recent article in Audubon about dwindling numbers of Grackles, I was happy to see at the feeders a flock of 30-35 in addition to 9-10 Red-Winged Blackbirds and about 5 or 6 Starlings.

Oh, and happy to welcome back the Chipping Sparrows to the yard.

On a mammalian note, I've seen this past week 2 road kills of possum - 1 on Rte 32 and Keene Neck and 1 on Biscay Rd across from Biscay "beach". This is the first time I've seen possum here.

[Maine-birds] Hybrid duck in Sagadahoc County

Good Afternoon Maine Birders,

I pulled into the parking lot at the Taste of Maine restaurant in Woolwich an hour ago for a quick scan of Pleasant Cove of the Sasanoa River. The tide was still fairly high but falling. Close to shore was an impressive concentration of dabblers, primarily Green-winged Teal (~300!). Among them was a drake oddity, which to my eye fit nicely as a Northern Pintail and American Wigeon hybrid -- neat looking bird. I seem to recall a hybrid here in the past so perhaps this is a returning bird.

I took some distant images, which I will eventually upload to eBird.
