> Raptor Observations:
> With good wind and good thermals, birds who had experienced less than ideal

[Maine-birds] Woodies and Hoodies - a few photos from 3/30

Took the kayak out on the Salmon Fall River in Acton on Saturday leaving from the Hopper Road.
There is a wonderful road side parking spot with great views of passing birds for anyone wanting to view from their car.
This is one of my favorite times of the year at ice-out when the waterfowl is always abundant.
The river was teaming with Woodies, Hoodies and Common Mergansers along with oodles of red winged blackbirds,  a solo kingfisher, and what appeared to be resident Osprey from the distance.
Enjoy the photos - you can start with this photo link and from here scroll through some of the others:  http://markhjonesphotography.zenfolio.com/p361915659/h59efbc2c#h59efb9c0.
Best,
Mark

[Maine-birds] Harlequin column in BDN

My thanks for several wicked good harlequin duck photos sent to me this
week. Doug Hitchcox had a pair of ducks that seemed to best match this
week's column in the Bangor Daily News:
http://bangordailynews.com/2013/03/29/outdoors/harlequin-ducks-are-whitewater-specialists/

What a day around Isle au Haut today. Lots and lots of Harlequins, one
flock of at least 150 Purple Sandpipers, a group of seven Razorbills, and
plenty of the usual suspects (loons, eiders, guillemots, buffleheads,
long-tailed ducks, red-breasted mergansers, both grebes, and all three
scoters.) Lots of good birds but nothing really unusual...except the great
weather. Forty people joined us on the Isle au Haut mailboat.

[Maine-birds] Red shouldered hawks

Not one, but two red shouldered hawks over our house today, one streaming north at speed, one circling around. Both calling!

[Maine-birds] Courting and mating harlequins - Ogunquit

Highlight of late morning to afternoon  birdwatching on Saturday 3/30, was a Harlequin Duck seen from the Marginal Way in Perkins Cove. There were only two males as far as we went, but it was a surprise for me to see courting and mating of a pair, just beyond the dirt trail which goes off to the side. That's as far as we went; there may have been more, but the numbers are decreasing, perhaps?

Other waterfowl there and at Wells Beach or harbor were unremarkable, but delightful.
Common Loon
Horned Grebe
Common Eider - dozens
Scoters - all three species. Good to see a Surf Scoter quite close.
Long-tailed Duck
Common Goldeneye- 1
Bufflehead-3
Mergansers -  all three species- it always means Spring to me when I see Hoodeds

We didn't look for the Piping Plovers in Wells.
No Purple Sandpipers. No redwings on the marsh that we could see.  We didn't stop.
No passerines, except for crows and Rock Pigeons at Billy's Chowder House on Mile Rd., Wells.
Crowds of people already, at Perkins Cove. Sunny, chilly by the ocean, but pleasant.
Fun to share scope and bird sightings with passersby.

[Maine-birds] Sandhill Cranes back at Messalonskee Lake, Belgrade

I stopped by the boat landing at Messalonskee Lake just before 4 pm to check for any Sandhill Cranes and spring waterfowl as the ice had gone out of the stream and south end of the lake and marsh since last week.

I was not disappointed.

Messalonskee Lake--boat ramp, Kennebec, US-ME
Mar 30, 2013 3:50 PM - 4:50 PM
Protocol: Stationary
Comments: sunny, 52 degrees; ice completely out of stream area, and part way out into the south end of the lake. 2 Ice fishermen were still on the ice however. Very active for birds compared to 6 days ago.
14 species (+2 other taxa)

Canada Goose 74
American Wigeon 2
American Black Duck 8
Mallard 16
American Black Duck x Mallard (hybrid) 1
Ring-necked Duck 36 swimming and foraging in stream area with other waterfowl. Counted several times.
Greater/Lesser Scaup 3
Bufflehead 4
Common Goldeneye 16
Hooded Merganser 4
Common Merganser 12
Common Loon 2
Bald Eagle 5 actively "combating" with each other. But also resting together on the beaver house in the marsh
One juvenile seen with large fish - perhaps from ice fishermen

Sandhill Crane 4 2 pair flew in; circled around across from Hammond Lumber; but settled in in the marsh to the right of the boat landing. Seen with bins and scope. 2 other birders and 2 other photographers there looking for cranes. Could see red on head, 2 were grayer, at least one was more rusty colored.
