[Maine-birds] Bar Harbor Whale Boat, 7/13

Hi Everyone,

Last Friday, my brothers and I boarded a whale & puffin boat out of Bar Harbor. The boat stopped at Petit Manan, then booked it to the SW bank of Grand Manan Bank, where we watched a group of humpbacks, before bolting directly back to Bar Harbor.

The bird highlights were:

Northern Fulmar - 3
Great Shearwater - 25
Sooty Shearwater - 4
Wilson's Storm-Petrel - 150
Leach's Storm-Petrel - 15
Northern Gannet - 1 (surprised to find only one)
SOUTH POLAR SKUA - 3
Pomarine Jaeger - 1
Parasitic Jaeger - 1

Plus, the expected alcids, terns, and gulls at Petit Manan. We also had two Puffins much further out to sea, including one that was 50+ miles out and probably in Canadian waters. Currently working on getting a few different lists w/photos into eBird to cover the trip, while avoiding having one excessively long checklist.

Good birding,
Robert Ostrowski

[Maine-birds] Deer Isle RFI

Greetings Maine birders, my partner and I will be visiting Deer Isle 7/28-8/4, staying just West of Stonington.

I've been checking eBird hotspots and have a Hancock County list compiled but would appreciate any input from local birders on the best spots and possible day trips within an hour or two. We'll probably spend one day visiting Arcadia National Park but we're not the crowd loving type and prefer less frequented areas.

Thanks in advance!

Thomas and Katie

[Maine-birds] Whimbrels back at Flat Bay, Harrington

A trickle of shorebirds (unidentified small peeps across the bay and Short-billed Dowitchers) are coming into Flat Bay and this morning we saw what we have been watching for - Whimbrels!!

Four birds this morning (about a half hour ago - the tide is still going out) makes this the earliest date by one day according to our 5 year records!

[Maine-birds] Northern Goshawks at Flat Bay, Harrington

During this morning's walk (around 5:30) I heard a Northern Goshawk "chanting" and then two more goshawks joined in the chorus.  I observed 3 birds but not well as they were deep in the tops of trees (and, I admit blushing, that I didn't have my binoculars this morning).  There appeared to be either (a) two immatures and another un-aged bird or (b) one immature and one female and another un-aged bird.

The birds were really loud and vocalized for at least 10 minutes before they moved farther into the woods.

This is the second time this week that I have found goshawk in this area.

[Maine-birds] Little Egret - Falmouth, 7/17

The (a) Little Egret is currently (10:20AM) foraging with a couple Snowy Egrets on the edge of the Presumpscot River off the North Meadow of Gilsland Farm in Falmouth. The tide is fairly low right now so it'll probably stick around for awhile.

Good birding,

[Maine-birds] They're back! Shorebirds at Flat Bay, Harrington

Yesterday afternoon we observed a compact flock of Black-bellied Plover flying down bay at high tide. These are the first sightings for us of south-bound shorebird migrants.

Also yesterday morning at Dyer Cove in Addison we saw one Black-bellied Plover and 3 Semipalmated Samdpipers at low tide.

[Maine-birds] Red-Throated Loon Popham Beach SP

Yesterday there was a red-throated loon present ~6:20 PM at Popham Beach SP. The bird was diving ~15 feet from land by the poles sticking out of the water on the beach close to the fort.
