Re: [Maine-birds] bluebirds and others

I heard a Bluebird 'churring' a few minutes ago, have not set eyes on it yet, if it hangs around this will be the earliest I have had them return here.

It's very birdy at my house in Sidney this a.m. I had a female purple finch show up for the first time this winter along with the mob of goldfinches and usual feeder birds (titmice, chickadees, wb nuthatches).

But the bluebirds are the bigger story. They are already defending a nestbox. It was interesting that a) it's only the end of February and they have already picked this one out and b) they drove off a starling who was investigating and a blue jay (?) who wouldn't nest in it anyway. Also it is a group of three bluebirds and not just a pair. Stay tuned.

[Maine-birds] Little auks

Tyler Kimbar and I paddled out to Damariscove Island and were treated to two Little Auks halfway between Damariscove and Cuckholds Island. It's always a treat to get out on the water in the winter and enjoy the birds wintering in our waters. I got a couple of identifying pics but bouncing along in the kayak rendered them a bit unsharp. Drop me an email if anyone would like the pics.

Re: [Maine-birds] eBird Problems

I'm just back from skiing hut-to-hut at Maine Huts & Trails. Two of the days we were out of cell reception. The new eBird update would not let me create off-line lists—it hung up on searching for a GPS signal. I hope they work the bugs out quickly.

Yesterday I had it start a new checklist. All my birds showed up in the first list but it stopped the time and distance. I could not get into or get rid of new list. I rebooted my phone and it cleared.

There is currently a male Red-winged Blackbird singing at Mainly Pawn in Damariscotta. Earliest record for me.

[Maine-birds] FOY Turkey Vulture - Freeport

About 30 mins ago, just off of the Desert Rd exit on I-295. Teetering low over the trees.

Earlier and earlier every year.
