[Maine-birds] Black-backed Woodpeckers

Maine Audubon’s annual pelagic trip is on Sunday, September 30th. At the request of several, I’ve put together a boreal birding trip for the day before, on September 29th. See www.mainebirdingtrail.com.

Today, I headed up  to one of the spots near Baxter State Park that we’ll be visiting in September and danged if a pair of Black-backed Woodpeckers weren’t exactly where they were supposed to be. A bunch of Gray Jays came by the same spot, and Boreal Chickadees presented no challenge. There were a few crossbills around, but nothing like last year. Apparently the Lincoln’s Sparrows had a good summer, because they were all over the area there, and several Fox Sparrows teed up nicely.

What makes the day really funny is that on July 22nd last year, I posted:

“By the way, if Sue from New Jersey asks you to take her birding, do it. She’s good luck. The last time I took her out two years ago, we had five BBWOs on the Burn Road. Now two more yesterday. I’m having a hard time convincing her they are not easy to get.”

I’ve now guided for her on four separate summer visits and we’ve scored Black-backed Woodpeckers each time, seemingly without really trying. She IS good luck.

On the drive home, over a hundred Common Nighthawks were circling around Medway just before the highway. Migration has started.
