Re: [Maine-birds] Radical new wind turbine design

Interesting.  The Chinese are also experimenting with a design that rotates on a vertical shaft and looks a bit like an overturned styrofoam cup with fins.  I'm sure about the bird friendly part though, as the structure is broader and built close to the ground.  It might actually take out more migrants than a propeller on a stick.

Saw this today.  These new wind turbines are as ugly as....well, giant plastic corkscrews...but to my eye they appear more bird-friendly (it looks like the birds would be far more likely to notice them and not fly into them).  And apparently they generate a good amount of electricity:
