Had a winter wren on the Perpendicular trail next to Long Lake in Acadia NP this afternoon. It was giving what Sibley referred to as a rapid series of high staccato call notes. At first I thought of a hairy woodpecker because the notes were rapid enough to sound like a trill, but I knew it wasn't right. I saw it fly across and land next to the trail ahead of us. I checked my sibley app on my iPod and the call notes on there sounded exactly right. I was not familiar with that type of winter wren vocalization!
Ebird asked me to confirm that one.
Also had both white winged and red crossbill flyovers-- got to see the white wingeds. I've been seeing or hearing one or the other species of them on almost every hike in the last few weeks! A few chickadees, kinglets and a creeper, also gulls and ravens and that is about it!
Best,
Leda Beth
