[Maine-birds] Maine Bird Atlas - Weekly Challenges, 4/10

Hi everyone:

Last week's results:
Great work by everyone who was atlasing! We had 48 people submit at least one eBird list with a breeding code, unfortunately only 24 people used the Maine Bird Atlas portal, so make sure you use ebird.org/atlasme (or select "Maine Bird Atlas" portal under "More" and "Settings and Account" on your phone). 61 probable woodcock records, 16 confirmed crows, and 17 mixed box-nesting species records rounded off the week! Congrats to Shiloh from Kennebunk, David from Scarborough, and Jeff from Damariscotta for being chosen by excel's random number generator as winners this week!

Here are the challenges for this week:

1) Rock Pigeons - With only 59 confirmed records, this species needs some attention. Before our brightly colored migrants return, put some effort into these non-native columbids. They are very easy to confirm - check under almost any bridge - and actually have some very entertaining mating rituals. Work on it now so we don't have to have a ROPI challenge again!

2) Northern Saw-whet Owls - We are within safe dates for almost all of our owls and saw-whets could use some attention. Code any tooting as "Singing", or if you've heard them for more than seven days bump it up to a probable record with "S7". We are in the safe dates for screech-owls as well, so I'll count any records from our southern atlasers who find singing screech-owls in the challenge as well.

3) Common Raven - Great work with the crows last week, how about confirming their larger cousins this week? Lets fill in some of these gaps: https://ebird.org/atlasme/map/comrav

Anyone who completes one of the challenges above will be entered to win any item of their choice (any product, style, color, size, etc) from the Maine Bird Atlas online store: teepublic.com/user/mainebirdatlas/. One entry per person per challenge (complete them all for 3x the chances of winning) from checklists submitted by 17 April 2020.

Good birding and happy atlasing!
