[Maine-birds] This Week's Highlights, 1/26-2/1.

Hi all,

Well, that was a roller-coaster week of weather, wasn't it? Anyway, here are my highlights from the past seven days:

- 2 adult BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS, Freeport Yacht Club, 1/26 (with Saturday Morning Birdwalk group).

- 1 Belted Kingfisher and 10 Hooded Mergansers, Eastern Road Trail, Scarborough Marsh, 1/27 (with Kristen Lindquist and Chris Borg).

- 5 CANVASBACKS (3 drakes and 2 hens), Presumpscot River, Falmouth from I-295N on 1/27 (with Kristen Lindquist) and from Route 9 on 1/28. No other CANV were found in a check of the other previously-reported locations.

- 14 RUDDY TURNSTONES, 4 Brant, 1 imm. Peregrine Falcon, and 67 Red-necked Grebes, Ocean Avenue, Biddeford Pool, 1/28.

- 2 drakes and 1 hen AMERICAN WIGEONS, Saco River behind the University of New England, Biddeford, 1/28.

- 6 AMERICAN PIPITS, Seapoint Beach, Kittery, 1/29 (with Jeannette).

- 85 Harlequin Ducks between The Nubble, York and Marginal Way, Ogunquit, 1/29 (with Jeannette).

- 1 leucistic hen Long-tailed Duck, The Nubble, 1/29 (with Jeannette). Photo:

- 11 Lesser Scaup, Marginal Way, Ogunquit, 1/29 (with Jeannette). Odd location.

- 2 Evening Grosbeaks, our yard in Pownal, 2/1.

- 2 drake Lesser Scaup and one hen Greater Scaup, Eastern Promenade, Portland, 2/1.

- 1 pair Barrow's Goldeneye continue in the Lower Haraseekett River in Freeport, most often in view from the Town Wharf at the end of Pine Street.

- all three merganser species continue in Yarmouth Harbor and in the Cousin's River at The Muddy Rudder through week's end.

[Maine-birds] Peregrine kill in Gardiner

I’m a little late in reporting this but yesterday morning as I pulled into the access road to the municipal parking lots along Cobbossee Stream in Gardiner, I glanced overhead to see a Peregrine Falcon barely 20 feet above me laboring to gain altitude with a dead Ring-billed Gull in its talons. As it dodged the wires and with the moving traffic and buildings adding to the confusion, it let go of the thoroughly dead gull which flopped down beside a startled fork lift driver who was unloading a pallet from a truck for the local hardware store. The Peregrine gained altitude and began soaring over the stream and then dove at a nearby soaring adult Bald Eagle, as if it were just annoyed with what had just happened. It then got all the town pigeons up and flying about before it headed back over the Kennebec. A few minutes later the fork lift operator carried the gull carcass over to the bank of the stream so presumably something may have had the opportunity to enjoy the meal even if not the Peregrine.

[Maine-birds] Golden Eagle, yes

The Benton-Clinton Golden Eagle put on a fine show between 1:15 and 1:30 today. Passing low over the cemetery, it took a diving (albeit unsuccessful) pass at a crow near the gound. It then circled over the now-bare Wyman Road fields for about 10 minutes, joined by two adult Bald Eagles that kettled as a group in the biting wind, rising up and passing out of sight to the north.

Comments: Ed and I took little time to watch our Red-headed Woodpecker at its cavity this morning. The bird has been less frequent at the feeder when the owner has been home and spending more time around the cavity and in the vicinity of the cavity tree. Today it was very vocal around me as I photographed from a distance. The bird looks healthy and active.

Comments: Wild Turkeys were the treat today with 15 foraging under Eddie's feeder. I was getting hungry as I looked at a few of those juicy Toms! The RUSTY BLACKBIRD continues today and was located foraging under the feeder. Brown Creeper was found as reported.

[Maine-birds] Pemaquid Point

This morning (the 1st) I spent about 2 hours at the point. Very windy with an extremely choppy sea. Saw the following.

Red-throated Loon 4
Common Loon 1
Red-necked Grebe 1
Great Cormorant 1
Common Eider 25
Long-tailed Duck 8
Black Scoter 2
Purple Sandpiper 6
Herring Gull 30
Great Black-backed Gull 1
Razorbill 33 (Unlike previous experiences most of these were within 300 yards of shore, so that one could get a good look at them)
Black Guillemot 1
American Crow 8

[Maine-birds] SNOW GOOSE CAMDEN

Canada Geese spent the night on the Megunticook River, above the dam at Knowlton St., for the first time this year. About 10AM today there were 22 geese on the river and another flock of 14 birds flew south from the area of the middle school and sewer plant. In the flying flock was one smaller white Snow Goose. It may have been headed back to the Resort. Thanks Dan for the original report.

Please make a note that that the date on this report is wrong . It was JANUARY 31 2013 which was the correct date for yesterdays Snow Goose sighting. (Not January 30)... late night data entry mistake.... sorry

I also found the Snow Goose mixed in with 56 Canada Goose.... Looks like others have seen it as well. It "stuck out like a sore thumb"

Comments: I managed a few minutes birding while attending the Governors Conference on Tourism held at Samoset Resort. Time is always a commodity that there is never enough of. These are a few including a Snow Goose mixed with 56 Canada Geese just tucked in behind the Breakwater. Snow Bunting were seen flying to the west of the main building. Very strong winds today on an incredible weather roller coaster ride starting with 52 degree F temperatures, fog and rain in the AM, breaking during the mid afternoon to broken cloudy blue sky, giving way to dropping temperatures and high winds! A classic January thaw.
