[Maine-birds] Bagged our nemesis bird

Finally! After three years in Maine, Bill and I finally spotted and got good looks at the Boreal Chickadee. Found a couple on the Gulf Hagas trail up in the 100 mile wilderness. A lifer for us. Very biddy up there this past weekend.

[Maine-birds] Popham Beach - Atkins Bay

Highlights:

108 BBPlovers (no goldens) counted on the flats of Atkins Bay, vis from Green Point.
In the mob were 3 Semi-sands and 3 SBDowitchers.

Among the Com Terns sailing around Atkins Bay, was at least one Roseate Tern.

4 Least Terns are patrolling their turf at Popham Beach.

[Maine-birds] Intervale Marshes - May 26

We birded early on the St Lawrence and Atlantic RR roadbed (New Gloucester) , down to the big marsh. Three of us put a lot of effort into finding continuing Blue-winged Warblers, but dipped. They just didn't perform today.

Other highlights included Olive-sided Fly, and Alder.\, Willow, Least Flies, as well as Phoebes and E Kingbirds.

12 spp. of warblers, including singing Wilson's Warbler.

4 Sandhill Cranes; including two that flew in high, then turned and split for parts unknown.

The American Bittern in the roadside wetlands near the start did his show, and 3 other Va. Rails also did their thing.

Also lots of bobolink activity and Rosy Gros singing and chasing.

I've never seen a Bank Swallow. Its funny there haven't been any Purple Finches. I usually see them every spring.

[Maine-birds] Grand Slam! Well, OK, a Messalonskee Grand Slam

On way back from camp, we stopped at Messalonskee Lake's south boat launch, as well as the Depot Rd Martin Colony and Hallowell Sand Pit, for the annual Spring Mesalonskee Grand Slam.

We lucked out with 11 Black Tern and 1 far distant "rusty" Sandhill Crane off the boat launch, a fair numbers of Martins at the Martin houses, on the north end of Depot Rd, and a half dozen, or so, of Bank Swallows at the Hallowell Sand Pit (Depot Rd). All locations are within 1.2 miles of each other.

[Maine-birds] Various Sightings

I went up to Intervale in New Gloucester today. I first checked out the
Intervale Perserve & the railroad tracks next to it & then went to St.
Lawrence & Atlantic Railroad. I managed to find the Alder Flycatchers, 9
between the 2 locations, Willow Flycatcher, only one, & the American
Bittern, not very far in on the ST. L&A tracks. It was off to the left.
I didn't go in far enough to see the Sandhill Cranes & the Blue-winged
Warblers didn't make an appearance. Links to lists follow.

On my way home I decided to stop at Biddeford Pool. The Snowy Owl was
still on Mile Stretch Road, 1st house on left. Who would have thought
we'd still see a Snowy Owl on Memorial Day. I wonder if he'll still be
around for Independence Day.

I scanned the point behind Hattie's from my car & saw a number of
shorebirds, mostly Black-bellied Plover. With the scope I could see
there were also Ruddy Turnstones, Dowitchers, didn't get a good enough
look from the car to see which one, & at least one Red Knot. There may
have been other shorebirds also.

I went to 7th St, South Point Sanctuary, not expecting much at 11:30,
but found a nice little flurry of activity. I ended up with 8 species of
warblers including Bay-breasted & Blackpoll and an Eastern Wood-pewee. I
ended up with 22 species.

After lunch & entering my sightings in E-bird, I remembered there was a
report of Blue-winged Warblers in Saco. I checked the sighting & decided
to go see if I could locate them even if it was a bit late in the day. I
drove out to 49 Smutty Lane & practically the 1st thing I heard was one
of the Blue-winged, I heard a second one a short while later. While
trying to get a look at the calling bird I heard & saw Common
Nighthawks, six, overhead. They were joined at one point by an Eastern
Kingbird. I ended up with 21 species.

[Maine-birds] Chimney Swifts in Auburn

At the Fabric Warehouse at 104 Washington St. you can see an old
abandoned factory in Auburn with the smoke stack chimney still
standing. On Saturday evening around 7:45 we watched in the pouring
rain for 45 minutes while 400 chimney swifts dove, wheeled, dispersed,
gathered, buzzed the chimney top, twittered like mad to each other,
hawked bugs, and fluttered. Finally, on some unknown signal, they
formed a black vortex moving in a counter-clockwise direction and
funneled into the chimney all at once like falling leaves in a wind
storm in about 15 seconds. Show over.

On Sunday Cindy Elias reported:

Clear skies; temps in 50's, low 60's.

Arrived 7:35 - no swifts in sight.

7:45 - first one shows up, then 2-3. Flying over Fabric Store, trees, but not over chimney.

8:00 - 6-10 birds

8:10 - 12- 15 birds ( no organized flight over chimney yet )

8:15 - 30- 40 birds

8: 16 - 60+ birds and beginning to circle over chimney ( ? a critical # needed to start the circling)

8:20 - 100+ birds...........and within a minute or so increases to several 100

With binocs I saw 2 small groups ( 10-20 ) go into chimney between 8:20 and 8:29.

8:29 - the remaining huge group goes in pretty much at once - perhaps 1-2 stragglers but by 8:30 the sky was empty.
