John Drury can be hired out of Vinalhaven, and he knows how to find the tropicbird. His contact info is here:

A visit to the waters around Seal Island (no landing allowed) requires an overnight on Vinalhaven; so one needs accommodations for that and plans for the ferry to and from Rockland.

Other options exist too, and one might consider taking Maine Audubon's annual trip to Matinicus Rock this Friday, 6 June: http://maineaudubon.org/events/seabirds-of-matinicus-rock-3/

The tropicbird hasn’t been over to Matinicus Rock for many years, but there’s always a chance, and it’s a great trip anyway.

I have a friend from PA who wants to know if there is public access to where the Tropicbird is being seen on Seal Island, or boat trips to the region? Any help would be appreciated.

[Maine-birds] Northern Maine Birds: Snowy Owl in summer

I know its not summer on the calendar yet, but... close enough for me.

Sarah Landry alerted me to a lingering Snowy Owl up in St Agatha today, so I took a ride north in the afternoon and easily found the bird perched on a utlility pole close to the road. A couple Tree Swallows were on the wire just down from it! ....Crazy.

[Maine-birds] New Sweden: Veery

Heard the first one of the summer a few minutes ago; seems early, though.

[Maine-birds] Trip to Matinicus Rock on Friday, 6 June

Hey everyone:

Maine Audubon's annual trip to Matinicus Rock is being held this Friday, 6 June, and departing from New Harbor at 8:00AM. There is still space available for this trip and you can register online at: http://maineaudubon.org/events/seabirds-of-matinicus-rock-3/

This trip is hard to beat for a good alcid show: Atlantic Puffins, Razorbills, and Black Guillemots by the hundreds with a strong showing of Common Murres, often including some sleek 'Bridled' murres. Arctic and Common Terns galore, plus we will make a detour to Eastern Egg Rock to search for Roseate Terns. The water is still pretty cold but we've had a good diversity of pelagics over the years (shearwaters, Wilson's Storm-Petrel, Northern Gannets, and phalaropes are possible) and you never know what could be moving into the Gulf of Maine: http://gloucester.7seaswhalewatch.com/whale-sightings-report-june-1-2014/
