[Maine-birds] Aroostook Cty today

Hi all - met Bill Sheehan at sunrise at Collins Pond in Caribou early today. Highlights included 800 Canada Geese, N Pintail, N Shoveler, both teal spp, 9 Pectorals, 2 Least pipers, both yellowlegs and more.

Other end of the day at Limestone was one of Bill's 2 Snow Geese in with ~300 Canada's.

Spud trucks are everywhere.

[Maine-birds] MACHIAS SEAL ISLAND REPORT

I got back on the island late yesterday morning, September 24th, so haven't had much time to wander around. Nonetheless, a few things are notable.

There were at least 8 BROAD WINGED HAWKS hunting and passing through in the very late afternoon. We see occasional Broad Winged most years but they are usually our least numerous. Thus Wednesday was a near record day.

Other raptors included 2 EAGLES, 1 PEREGRINE, 1 HARRIER & 1 MERLIN.

I found 1 GOLDEN PLOVER, likely one of the several which have been seen for several days.

Other species of birds are fairly unremarkable: a few Kinglets; scattered Vireos; lots of Savannah Sparrows; a sprinkle of SONG, SWAMP and WHITE THROATED SPARROWS; a couple of SPOTTED SANDPIPERS; 1 LEAST SANDPIPER.
Of course, there were a few unidentified but intriguing sulkers.

Also of special note were at least 10 MONARCH BUTTERFLIES, the latest arriving after 6pm.

This morning, just after sunrise, there was a Peregrine Falcon screaming like crazy and racing around for no apparent reason.

[Maine-birds] Monhegan highlights (YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD, CONNECTICUT WARBLER, etc.), 9.24.14

The YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD continued to be seen flying over town throughout the day, including an amazing view from the lawn of the Trailing Yew (where I'm staying) when it perched atop a nearby spruce for awhile late this afternoon, affording much better looks than this morning's fly-over.

Bryan Pfeiffer reported a CONNECTICUT WARBLER on Burnt Head Trail this morning.

Other highlights not previously mentioned, most of these reported by others:
Dickcissel - 1 behind the school. (Birders should remember that school IS in session during normal school hours, so please be quiet and discreet when birding around the school.)
Clay-colored Sparrow - 1 bird apparently continuing near pumpkin patch
Sora - 1 in Meadow
Wood Duck - up to 4 reported throughout day; I saw 1 by the pump house early on
Scarlet Tanager - at least 1
Warblers included Cape May, Blackburnian, Wilson's, Tennessee.
Red-headed Woodpecker continues. First sapsuckers showing up too.
And didn't someone say something about seeing or hearing White-crowned Sparrows today?

I also heard several rumors of possible Myiarchus-like flycatchers today, so if you're out here, keep your eyes open!

The perfect weather and excellent camaraderie of the island's birding visitors continues.

[Maine-birds] Hummingbirds and Cormorants

Wed. 9/24/14
Four immature or female Ruby-throated Hummingbirds working flowers at Thuya Gardens in Northeast Harbor (Mt. Desert I.) today.
Several vees of Double-crested Cormorants passing south between Schoodic Pt. and MDI this morning.
Fourteen Canada Geese that were totally hidden in the grass were stirred up by a Coast Guard maintenance crew that landed at the Egg Rock lighthouse in Frenchman Bay this morning.
A couple of Gannets passed by the mouth of Frenchman Bay this afternoon. The first seen since early July. In spite of regular schools of herring that have been attracting flocks of gulls and up to 20 Harbor Porpoise off and on in Sep. the Gannets have ignored the bay area.

[Maine-birds] Saxl Park, Bangor: Bohemian Waxwings & others

Seems ridiculously early but there were at least 8 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS at Saxl Park this afternoon, in viburnum & crabapple trees in the corridor of shrubs and trees past the field across from the Dorothea Dix Center.   I saw them closely before they flew up together and joined a flock of 50 or so more Waxwings , which appeared overhead & sounded mostly like Cedars...  the whole ball of them then drifted off into some trees further away.

Other birds there today:

House Wren (2)
Palm Warbler (1 foy), Yellow-Rumped, C. Yellowthroat
Hermit Thrush (1)
Savannah Sparrow

Sean Smith

[Maine-birds] New Sweden Crow Roost

Over the past 2 weeks our woods have become a roosting spot for about 100 crows every evening.  This is new for us and, boy, are they noisy as they fly in!  They aren't always in the exactly the same trees as the night before, but they do congregate in the same general area of about 5 or 6 acres.

[Maine-birds] Just hanging out around the bird bath

After a while the birds resumed their feeding and drinking and bathing. Quite relaxing just watching them go about their business.

Cheers,
