Greetings, birding friends! I almost didn't post this sighting because
it's a wee bit sketchy. But the whole thing was so cool...
Anyhow, yesterday about 7AM I was walking Tashi on Crescent Beach in
Cape Elizabeth. The weather conditions were bizarre: a howling
southeast wind off the water was blowing foam up the beach and pushing
us sideways. The blast was warm and smelled like the ocean smells
hundreds of miles offshore, in the deepwater canyons beyond the
continental shelf. And just behind the beach glowering purple rain
clouds butted up against that onshore wind, unable to move forward.
Overall conditions for birding (and flying) were tough.
Suddenly my watering eyes beheld a group of 5 terns being blown off
the water, about 300 yards up the beach. They were silent and it was
hard to see anything other than their shape and flight style, but they
gave the impression of being Sterna type terns. I couldn't rule out
Common Tern but I'm guessing Forster's Tern is more likely. (I
couldn't make them into anything really amazing like Bridled or Sooty
terns. Nor were they Bonaparte's Gulls.) The wind instantly tossed
them inland over the roof of the Inn By The Sea. I didn't have time to
check Great Pond but they might've hung out there til the wind
shifted, as it shortly did.
So there you have it.
Peace & good birding,
