[Maine-birds] GREAT HORNED OWL Phippsburg FW: eBird Report - Totman Cove, Phippsburg, Nov 14, 2012

Phippsburg, Maine, Map 6 Totman Cove

4:46 pm today, GREAT HORNED OWL
While talking on the phone, I saw a HUGE, bird fly by my living room windows. Large size and unfamiliar flight of a bird that big at almost total dark caught my attention. I got off the phone immediately and grabbed the camera. I could clearly see the distinct tufts or ears of the bird which had landed in a nearby spruce tree jsut south of my house. I took lots of shots though my hands were shaking as I was in complete disbelief. I had to use the fastes shutter speed I had and then flash, though the bird was too far away for that to be of much use, to get the shots. But, the tufts and size and body shape are perfectly clear, though the bird is mostly silhoutted. No vocalizing heard. The bird flew to a snag a little further south, sat a fw more mins then took off. I whistled a few times and it turned toward me. The flash showed in its eyes! WOW! A new yard bird, too. Not bad!
