[Maine-birds] Belfast Bay census of Thursday, Jan. 5, 2017

Gary Gulezian and I did the census this morning.  The number (14) of species and the number (1171) of individual birds seen were typical for this time of year.  Also, typical was that the overwhelming majority of those birds were Mallards (589) and Herring Gulls (363).  Grebes were low with only one Horned Grebe recorded, but this could have been due in part to a heavy chop on the bay this morning, which made finding any birds more difficult.  An adult Bald Eagle was seen feeding on a small duck, which from what could be seen may have been a female Common Goldeneye.  Also, a Lesser Black-backed Gull was seen by five of us birders near the footbridge across Belfast Harbor.  The entire report can be found on ebird at
