I also wanted to get a nice camera with zoom lens, but ended up with the Nikon Coolpix. It is OK, but really wish it had a manual focus and manual aperture adjustments that were practical yo use. It is still pretty new to me, so I have not learned how to use some of fancy features. I do use it with a tripod sometimes, but not very often.
