Weather:
Not the most pleasant weather today but not nearly as bad as I had made it out to be. Visibility was great for all but the last few minutes of the count. Temps were chilly and a little damp. There was a very light easterly breeze in the morning hours which increased in intensity and swung around to more SE in the afternoon bringing some cold ocean air. Just before the final hour I could see the approaching snow as it devoured the landscape to the SW. Heavy snow finally reached me on the hour. I stood in the snow for 15 minutes until visibility in all directions was near zero at which point I beat feet outa there.
Raptor Observations:
Local birds and migrants were hard to come by today. Our first Peregrine of the season stole the show and made the inclement conditions worth it. The Peregrine circled in over the summit from the W and climbed in altitude. There was likely a little updraft off the face of the mountain with the SE winds as this bird climbed quickly without a wingbeat.
Non-raptor Observations:
I think this was the slowest day yet for other northbound birds. Only 99 Canada Geese, 2 American Black Ducks and 1 Mallard were seen heading north. only 20 species were seen or heard today.
Predictions:
Hopefully the overnight precipitation will have moved out by the time we start tomorrow. Clouds should be diminishing a bit during the day, possibly letting in some sun for potential thermal production. Strong winds, in the 10-15mph range and stronger gusts could keep any thermals to a minimum however. Temps should be a little more comfortable, in the mid 40's.
