Bradbury Mountain State Park
Pownal, Maine, USA
Visitors:
Not many people made the trek to the summit today, despite the nice weather. 11 stopped by the Hawkwatch.
Weather:
It was a beautiful late March day at the Brad today. Temperature climbed to 50 and the wind was light most of the day. A northerly breeze swung around to the west throughout the day, finally becoming a stiffer sea breeze from the south for the last hour. The sky was mostly cloud-free until the final hours, with a fully overcast sky by 4:00EDT.
Raptor Observations:
Each of the first two hours of the day had raptor numbers in the teens, but that tapered off gradually through the remainder of the day. Turkey Vultures led the way, with a fair number of Red-tailed Hawks as well. 2 Merlins in the second hour and a fantastic top-down view of a male Northern Harrier were highlights.
Non-raptor Observations:
Blackbirds and Canada Geese were moving through in flocks this morning. The first Eastern Phoebe of the season was heard early in the day. 28 species were observed in total. Those deemed migrating were: 171 Common Grackles 170 Canada Geese 20 Red-winged Blackbirds 12 duck sp. 9 European Starlings 8 Tree Swallows 8 blackbird sp. 3 American Robins 2 Pine Siskins 1 Common Loon
Predictions:
Tomorrow may be a little touch and go. There is the possibility of precipitation throughout the day which could affect visibility. Winds are forecast to be out of the north with cloudy skies. We will have to hope some birds are moving between any bouts of shower activity.
