[Maine-birds] Eastern Screech Owl & Pine Siskins

I, too, have a lingering screech owl here on the Lower Dedham Rd in Holden. Today there are dozens of pine siskins monopolizing the feeders.

[Maine-birds] Lingering Eastern Screech-Owl - York

A colleague of mine brought in a recording of a bird call he heard in his neighborhood the night of Oct 16th.

It was a distant call, but it was clearly the whinny of an EASTERN SCREECH-OWL. This was in the same neighborhood that the bird was found in early this year.

The most recent eBird sighting is from early August, but it sounds like the bird might still be around.

It might be worth checking out.

Re: [Maine-birds] Re: Camera strap failure for people who carry a camera

On a similar note, I carry a 500mm on a monopod.  Once the camera came loose... luckily I noticed it before it dropped off... I must have hit the release button.  I now have a safety strap from the camera to the lens, so if it happens again, the body will just hit me and not the ground.

In my case the metal pin at the end of the carabiner had worn down enough to come right out of the buckle on the strap.  Fortunately the camera and lens fell on soft ground and there was no damage.  These straps are great but can fail, so a back-up system to prevent catastrophe is mandatory!

I had just taken mine off when I read your message so I checked and found mine was perhaps 50% worn through.  Without your comment I would never have checked that part, so a big Thank You.  I love my camera strap but I did learn the hard way that the screw loop does loosen over time (and not a really long time) and my camera dropped, resulting in some damage, so now I have trained myself to check that it is tight every time I go out.  And time to buy a new one.

One of my birding friends just told me that his Carbineer pulled out of the buckle,  his camera and lens hit the ground.   It was soft dirt so no damage.

I checked my strap and noticed the Carbineer has worn through by about 60 percent, so I added a shoelace to go from the tripod mount to the strap as a safety back up.

So because I care, I would suggest you check your straps for wear so you do not damage your camera and lens.

Happy birding and photo shooting

[Maine-birds] Pine Grosbeaks

While walking around at Perch Pond in Old Town, I had around 6-7 Pine Grosbeaks fly overhead.  Also heard Evening Grosbeaks and Purple Finches.
