[Maine-birds] Tufted Puffin

I have been trying to look up weather conditions when the Tufted Puffin has been spotted on The Captain Fish Puffin Cruise to Eastern Egg Rock but no luck. Has this bird been seen on this trip when the weather has been clear and sunny. Seems it's there mostly during fog and showers in the area. Thanks for any help. Leon Mooney

[Maine-birds] Re: Nearest Bicknell’s thrush to Augusta

Thanks to everyone who gave me advice on finding a Bicknell's Thrush. I ended up going to Saddleback ski resort and climbing up to the summit. You weren't kidding about that being a difficult hike! Brutal for a well fed middle aged bloke such as myself. I got to the summit junction with the AT at about 8:15 am and slowly walked along the ridge for about a kilometer over the course of the next hour, looking and listening. We were in the clouds with mist streaming by, temp about 67°. Merlin heard several distant Bicknell's calls, but I never heard them at all, either live or on Merlin playback. I could see the sonogram, but they were too soft for me to hear via my iPhone speaker (I blame my front row attendance at a Who concert in 1975 for my diminished hearing. Worth it.)

I was starting to have my first thoughts of maybe packing it in when a Bicknell's showed up about 50 meters from where I was standing. I got great views, photos, audio, and 30 sec or so of video. (eBird checklist coming later).

Hiking back down was, if anything, even harder than going up.  Worth it.

[Maine-birds] Monhegan Island, 7.6.23

I'm going to be working on Monhegan for part of every week this summer, and while I've spent time (and birded) here in the summer before, the island continues to surprise me. Today I saw an Indigo Bunting on Horns Hill—it shouldn't be unexpected but I'd never seen one here before in summer. Then later heard a Greater Yellowlegs over the harbor. On an after-dinner walk, I watched for quite a while as a huge number of White-winged Crossbills—80? 100? there were several large flocks moving around—enthusiastically fed in the spruce trees around and beyond the Brewery. Cones were raining all around me as I watched them. They were singing a bit in the trees and very vocal in flight. Tonight on Horns Hill I'm hearing a Sora calling down in the Meadow and before it got too dark, I was seeing/hearing an American Woodcock fly back and forth between the hill and the Meadow. Swainson's Thrushes at dusk were expected but also lovely to hear.

Another sighting that was expected but always a pleasure was the good number of Wilson's Storm-petrels seen from the ferry on the way out this morning.

Re: [Maine-birds] Digest for maine-birds@googlegroups.com - 2 updates in 1 topic

Was at the plains on Friday and no shrike. Thanks for the update on Brownfield, Eric.

Hello Maine Birders,

I wanted to share that if you plan on going to Brownfield Bog WMA anytime
soon, you better bring your wellies (and insect repellent).

I was there Friday morning and didn't get very far. There were several
people in my group that didn't have knee high rubber boots so we
essentially did a stationary count. The road beyond the dynamite shack had
ankle deep flowing water for long stretches. It was very birdy and we
picked up several of the marquee species directly from the parking area:
Yellow-throated Vireo, Virginia Rail, Pied-billed Grebe and Yellow-billed
Cuckoo. Check out our eBird checklist for the complete list:

Plenty of mosquitoes there too, as expected.

Good birding,
Eric

Thanks for that info,  Eric.  I was thinking of going there this  week, but I don't own a pair of boots like that, so I'll change my plans.  I wonder if that Shrike is still being seen at the Kennebunk Plains . . . .
