We birded the area around Sabattus Lake a few hours yesterday afternoon and a few hours this morning. We have a cumulative count of 10 duck species including 2 Canvasback, 6 Redhead and 6 Bufflehead (seen from Sanborn Road). At the same place we saw the Bufflehead we saw a lone Herring Gull with lots of Ring-billed Gulls resting on a small gravel bar.
We a Pied-billed Grebe in the slough off Highway 126 and another at the north end of the lake where Bull Run Road crosses Dead River. We saw a Horned Grebe in the northwest portion of the lake off Sawyer Road.
This morning it sure looked like the Turkey Vultures were ganging up to head south. From Riley Road on the southeast end of the lake we saw 50+ Turkey Vultures soaring above the ridges. On the way back to Harrington it seemed TVs were always in view.
