[Maine-birds] Merrymeeting Bay - Apr 06

The farm fields around the perimeter of Merrymeeting Bay must be host to a million Robins…or more.

The Abby mouth is still locked up, but the channel running the length of the bay was busted up by cutters a few days ago and much open water is present. The SW corner (off Foreside and Pleasant res) is mostly open, and also hosting many ducks and geese.

One muddy, farm field off Centers Pt Rd held about 475 ducks, including 7 Am Wigeon; 38 GWTeal; 3 N Pintails; 2 Woodies; 24 Killdeer; a Gray Ghost and a Woodcock. The bulk of the biomass was made up of Mallards and Black Ducks.

Nearby was a group (6+) of very vocal Rusty Blackbirds, foraging on remaining ice in a roadside "slough". Bald Eagles are everywhere, mostly standing watch on the remaining ice, but there was also a mid-air interaction involving 3 birds, near a known nest site.
