[Maine-birds] Palm warbler Messalonskee Marsh

Hi Folks,

I birded Messalonskee Marsh from different locations along Rt 17; and the road that runs parallel to Rt 17 starting across from the Hammond Lumbar parking lot.  I was present from 1:30 to 4:00 pm.  Viewing conditions were excellent as temps started at 49 F and reached 50 when I departed.

 

Birds in the marsh were fairly sparse.  Canada geese, common mergansers and bald eagles were the most abundant birds along the marsh.

6      Common goldeneyes (mostly males)

14    Common mergansers (mostly males)

12    Bald eagles (12 were observed at one time by another                       birder/photographer that included 2 adults; 6-7 birds including 1 adult         were associated with dead pickerel tossed onto the ice)

        Five birds were associated with dead pickerel; remaining birds                   were seen on ice or the edge of marsh west of the Rt 17 bridge                 across the outlet stream.

        3 adults

        9 1 to 3 yr old birds

1     Ring-billed gull on ice

1     Hairy woodpecker (woods along marsh)

1     Mourning dove (woods along marsh)

7     Black-capped chickadees (4 along the road parallel to Rt. 17)

9     American crows (4 in the marsh)

8     American robins (along the road parallel to Rt. 17); 7 were very              dark, good-looking males (not the Newfound morph); 1 dull female

~20   Red-winged blackbirds (along road parallel to Rt. 17)

1      Palm warbler (Along edge of marsh at the end of the access road        before the visitor's center)

2      Dark eyed Juncos (along the road parallel to Rt. 17)

3      Song sparrows (1 along the marsh edge and 2 along the road        parallel to Rt. 17)

Zero  English sparrows (along the road parallel to Rt. 17)
