Visitors:8 people visited the hawkwatch.
Weather:It was a brisk day, with northeast winds becoming easterly in the late afternoon. Skies were overcast. The count began 15 minutes late due to morning snow showers, and counting was suspended from 11:30 am EST- 12:45 pm EST due to snow and poor visibility. Before and after the flurry, visibility was good.
Raptor Observations:Raptor activity was slow, but resident Turkey Vultures were quite active for about an hour following the midday snow flurry. A large group of 14 vultures meandered back and forth along the horizon, along with other scattered individuals. A low, quick Merlin was a nice highlight in the afternoon- first of the season!
Non-raptor Observations:15 bird species were observed from the mountain. Some large kettles of gulls were circling over Portland. Species deemed migrating:
45 Canada Geese
2 American Goldfinches
2 American Robins
Predictions:Weather tomorrow looks rainy for most of the day. A few hours of counting may be possible, especially during late afternoon when some clearing and westerly winds are predicted. Raptor movement will probably be slow just after the rain. However, weekend weather looks good for hawkwatching and enjoyable hiking in the park. Stay tuned!
