In Venice, Florida - Lots of great "stuff" as my mom used to say here,
-- at the Venice rookery, Great Blue Herons, Anhingas, Great Egrets, Cormorants, and much more, plus a huge alligator there the other day with it's mouth open - you could see right down it's throat! Black crowned night herons landing in the outskirts. I have discovered a couple other rookeries in 2, what do you call them, developments, which I told the Venice Audubon about and they did not know about them. Pays to ride around with your dachshund.
I have a small place in Venice not on the island but near Curry Creek, and there is a pair of Sharp shinned hawks hanging around my back yard. Riding my bike in a nearby complex (with the dachshund in the attached basket), we saw tri colored herons, little blue herons and great blue herons.
So much great birding here, the Celery Fields, Laurel Landfill (where eagles sit atop trash… ) , the rookery, and more.
If anyone is headed down to the Venice area or the Sarasota area, I would love to mutually discover new places with you anytime between now and May 1!
