I got the chance to tag along on a spruce grouse study in the North Maine Woods today over multiple logging roads in the Telos area. By noon, we had handled three hens, while also sighting three moose and a bear.
With a little time left in the afternoon, I set off in search of woodpeckers. Boreal chickadees, gray jays, olive-sided flycatcher, and yellow-bellied flycatchers were pleasant. Another male spruce grouse was additional excitement, but the American three-toed woodpecker was the highlight.
