Visitors:The start of the work week, and the end of school vacation brought fewer people to the hawkwatch today. Morning and afternoon hours were the busiest. 16 people stopped by the watch, while a few more continued past without stopping.
Weather:Over the coarse of the day, winds gradually shifted from the northeast to southeast. The count ended with a steady east-southeast breeze. Visibility was good for the whole day, heat distortion being an issue at greater distances. Temperatures at midday were comfortable, in the 60s.
Raptor Observations:Another decent day. One highlight for a few of us, was a large Sharp-shinned Hawk in a steep dive towards the summit. The bird was circling above the summit when something caught its eye. Landing gear came down, wings pulled in, and the Sharpy dropped straight down into the trees in front of us. It was almost game over for the hawkwatch Phoebe. The afternoon had a nice mix of birds. Cooper's Hawks had a good hour between 3 and 4 o'clock. Today brought in a couple more Peregrine Falcons, one of which was down relatively low, and directly overhead.
Non-raptor Observations:Maybe due to the wind direction, we saw a relatively large number of Double-crested Cormorants close to the mountain, 112 in total. Other migrants included:
11 Yellow-rumped Warblers
6 Purple Finches
5 Tree Swallows
3 Canada Geese
2 Common Grackles
1 Brown-headed Cowbird
1 Barn Swallow
1 Belted Kingfisher
1 Common Loon
Predictions:Winds tomorrow may be a little stronger, in the 10-20mph range. The wind direction is predicted to be from the east northeast. Temps may not get much warmer than 50 degrees. Rain should be moving in by the afternoon hours. If rains hold off long enough, there could be a few migrants early on, trying to get ahead of the precipitation.
