Visitors:
16 visitors on this grey Wednesday, many of whom brought their thinking caps, and some good questions.
Weather:
A relatively mild day at the mountain. Winds remained light, mostly from the northeast. Temps climbed to the low 30's by mid afternoon. Clouds covered the region for the duration of the count. Visibility was the best yet this season. Birds and landmarks appeared larger, closer, and more crisp than on most sunny days.
Raptor Observations:
With a northerly breeze, snow cover, and an impending storm, there was not much bird movement today. I spent some time watching a Red-tailed Hawk kiting, like it had locked eyes with Medusa, frozen in time and space.
Non-raptor Observations:
American Robins couldn't decide where to go today. Small flocks would travel north a little ways before reversing course, and then do it again. There was a flyover by a Pine Siskin and Purple Finch during the calm morning hours.
Predictions:
Tomorrow's count could be postponed until mid day due snowfall continuing through the overnight into Thursday. Accumulation predictions seem to be a little ambiguous, but probably won't amount to much more than a few inches. Snow could turn to rain in the afternoon. That sounds nice. Winds could be blowing from the north at 20 mph with occasional gusts of about 30 mph. Air temps should be in the mid 30's, until the wind starts blowin'. If I'm on the mountain tomorrow, I will do my best to find a bird amongst the mess.
