Re: [Maine-birds] common nighthawks - barn swallows - Benton Farm

Two common nighthawks were flying around the farm last evening.  Pretty cool.  They came real close and could see the white bar on the inside of the v tip wings real clear.  The buzz sound was loud and clear.  This the first time I have seen them in Benton.  They were common in Hartford, Ct when I grew up.

The barn swallows are gone.  About 30 plus gathered up last Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and by Thursday, August 30, there were non to be seen.  This is the latest they have left in the 14 years I have been observing here.  They usually leave about August 8th with a few stragglers waiting for the second brood to leave the next.  A few of the pairs of barn swallows had two broods.  Not all.  The last babies flew out of the barn and sheds about 1 week ago.  The babies came back each night and stayed in or on the nest overnight.

It is quite around the farm right now.  Some turkeys wander the fields, a phoebe is catching bugs, some gold finch flit around and just pass by, and some little sparrows are eating seeds off the grasses, and hummingbirds stop at the feeders for a drink.  There are eagles to be seen from time to time.  I do not feed the birds except the hummingbirds during the summer until the first snow.  There is plenty of seeds on the wild and not so wild flowers and grasses for the birds.

Last night in Brunswick I could see from my patio about 12 Chimney Swifts and about 20 Nighthawks all flying together. There were all hawking for sure. RRR

Glad to get in on the annual nighthawk migration with 6 over our house in Sidney this afternoon. There seemed to be a few swallows (barn? cliff?) traveling with them.
