[Maine-birds] Finch Fest

I’ve previously posted that this is a weird winter. Sandi and I are in Jackman, doing some Maine Bird Atlas winter surveys. Common redpolls remain abundant. Pine Grosbeaks are numerous. However, the result deviates in two ways from last year. Last year, everything flooded through in early winter, then vanished. This year, lots of finches seem to be in the northern areas, but most don’t seem to have sagged farther south than Bangor. At least, I’m not seeing many reports. Would love to hear otherwise.

Every year, I try to document the annual Finch Fest. I see that YouTube lost my Finch Fest 2021. Here’s an update: Finches Invade Maine - YouTube. Given all the finches up here during the survey, I fully expect a Finch Fest 2022 video once all of them are surveyed and counted. Yippee! Today started at the Quebec border at minus-8. But by late morning, it was all the way up to 13 degrees. It was so warm, I had to remove a sweater.

Wow, a "Bahamian Waxwing" would, I think, be a  new bird to science.  Keep your eyes peeled. 😉  I wouldn't mind a little  Bahamian weather right now.
I saw several mixed flocks of Cedar Waxwings and Robins in the Waterville/Fairfield area yesterday, as well as a flock in Farmington.  The Farmington flock had at least 2 Bohemian Waxwings, the first I've seen this winter.

RE: [Maine-birds] york beach glaucous

I also had a glaucous gull about 0730 this morning on the mostly frozen Royal River behind the Royal River Grillhouse. Apparent 2nd winter bird, crazy white and darn beautiful…it decided to fly away upriver about 4 seconds before I got my camera focused through the spotting scope!!!

[Maine-birds] Hoary Redpoll

It was minus-19 when Sandi and I approached the Canadian border above Jackman this morning, ready for Day Two of Maine Bird Atlas surveying in a remote corner of Maine. Fortunately, it warmed up to minus-9, and we completed our fourth segment of the weekend.

Highlights included a young male northern goshawk and a hoary redpoll yesterday.

Overall, the finchiness continues in the Other Maine. Plenty of common redpolls, scattered white-winged crossbills, a few flocks of red crossbills (not very cooperative) and pine grosbeaks.

Despite the cold, the cloudless blue sky and snow-covered logging roads were stunningly beautiful, and the birds were quite active this morning even in the chill.

Oh, and four moose, all close and puzzled.

[Maine-birds] Midcoast Birding (Steller's & Bullock's) 22 Jan 2022

Yesterday, was a "stellar" day  for birding.   Started off the day by seeing both the Baltimore Oriole and the Bullock's Oriole at the house in Nobleboro, ME.  The first one spotted was the Baltimore that came into the large green feeder about 0720 in the morning.  After feeding at the feeder, it flew off and a few minutes later, the Bullock's appeared at the same feeder.  After feeding, it flew to the ground, preened/flashed some tail feathers and then took off.  I waited around for another 30 minutes but they did not reappear.   It was zero degrees at the time so I decided to leave as I was freezing.  These are relatively easy birds to see as the homeowners have the feeders in their small front yard and you can stand on the side of the road and see them easily when they come in.

From there, moved on to find the Steller's Eagle.  Spent time looking for it at Ft. William Henry, Pemaquid Point, and Boothbay area when the word went out that it was at the fort so I returned there and saw it.  It was quite a distance across the water from the lower parking lot in a tree. Not easily visible with binoculars but a good look through a spotting scope.

As an added bonus, one birder spotted a dovekie in the water (out near the solitary. moored sailboat) that was repeatedly diving.  Again, a spotting scope worked best as it was pretty far off. A nice look at dovekie and a lifebird for me.

[Maine-birds] Biddeford/Kennebunkport CBC on Jan 1st

I realized that I never posted this, better late than never.  The 62nd Biddeford/Kennebunkport CBC that took place on Saturday, January 1st.  We had 33 birders and 13 feeder counters, mostly birding individually or in small family groups. The day was overcast with heavy fog and rain most of the day, temperatures were in the mid-30's with little or no wind.

Total species 73, Total birds 10,346, Plus 3 CW species.  This was the lowest number of species and second lowest number of birds found for the last 10 years.  The rain and fog made the birding difficult.  We did have a new species added this year, an Osprey found on River Rd in Biddeford, the north area of section 1. There were high counts again this year for Bald Eagle and Carolina Wren. We also had high counts for Sanderling and Ring-billed Gulls.  We had only 3 Purple Sandpipers where we usually have 100+, sea bird counts were low, and we had a new low for American Tree Sparrow. There were no northern finches.

Re: [Maine-birds] Sapsucker question

Thank you for the responses…and I forgot to say I am in Gorham!  We have been taking photos this year as well.

Yes, I just spotted one a few days ago on the oak tree in our backyard.  I've seen them before this time of year.  I do Cornell FeederWatch and I've
also been questioned about these sightings so this time my husband took a photo for me to attach to my count.

We have had a male yellow-bellied sapsucker hanging around. I know this is not supposed to be common for winter in Maine but this is the second or third winter one has remained.  Have others seen them as well?  We are curious as to whether this is another bird that's generally staying north more often now than in previous years.  I know when I reported one on a GBBC list once in the last couple of years, the list questioned my accuracy. :)

Thank you!

[Maine-birds] Eastern Bluebird in Skowhegan

Hi, I just had an Eastern Bluebird at my mealworm feeder here in Skowhegan. This has been a very strange year. I have never had bluebirds during the winter!

Re: [Maine-birds] Hermit thrush and 66 robins!

Cool, good sightings, must be abundant food available.  I've seen robins all winter long high in the Boundary Mountains when there is a good mountain ash crop.  They are hardy birds as long as they can find food.
I'll be on the lookout northwest of Rangeley this weekend!

Cheers,

Those must be my neighbor's Robins, which departed after cleaning out his crabapple tree last week.  😉  It's only a couple of miles, as the Robin flies.  Robins are generally around all winter in small flocks, searching out the crabapple trees and other similar plants.  Even so, that's a good sized flock you had.  I've seen  Hermit Thrush around here in mid-winter, as well, but very rarely.  What was more surprising (for me, anyway) was the Red-winged Blackbird I found on the Waterville Xmas Count a few weeks ago.  And these birds seem to be able to survive the cold as long as they can find enough food.

Linda Powell and I went out on a survey for the Maine Bird Atlas yesterday to celebrate my birthday.  At the Lake George boat landing in Skowhegan, we counted 66 (!) robins flitting around in the trees and shrubs.  We've both seen robins gathered up like that when they return in early spring, but in late January, this far north and inland?  Never.

While we were busy counting robins, a non-robin hopped up onto a log near a small stream with open water.  It was an overwintering hermit thrush!  Linda got some good pictures of it. Weird winter...I hope it survives.
