Phippsburg, Me map 6 Totman Cove
Just this second, had a second Northern Shrike. This bird was very brown, with slight 'barring,' or sort of stipey breast marks. The bird from a couple of days ago was very pale, buffy and whitish gray. Today's bird got my attention behaviorally: was hovering in mid air, dove to top of bushes, then dove in toward the ground. I did not see it catch anything. It took off east toward Morse Mountain.
Had I been on the other side of the house, where the first one had appeared, I would have missed it.
Linda W had just asked me if the Shrike from recently had reappeared and I said no.
I have had higher counts of Juncos and chickadees than ever before. Juncos have been running from 30ish to over 50 birds and a couple of dozen or more chickadees. Apparently, the shrikes have noticed.
