Wally Sumner reported a Snowy Owl at the intersection of Battle Ridge and Goodrich Roads in Clinton this morning. This area is less than a mile east of the Hinckley Road where Tom Aversa and others have seen a Snowy Owl recently. Margaret Viens and I could not refind the Snowy Owl but did see a Northern Shrike in the area.
A stop at Shawmut Dam on the Fairfield side of the Kennebec River shortly after midday yielded an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull and 16 Iceland Gulls (this is the area above the dam at the end of Main St. in Shawmut, which is north of I-95 on Rt 201). This same area had a hybrid Lesser Black-backed x Herring and 23 Iceland Gulls on the 10th. The birds use the open water for bathing and drinking between forays to the dairy farms in the area. The best time seems to be midday from 11-2.
