[Maine-birds] Bradbury Mountain Spring Hawkwatch starts Tuesday!

Hi all,

Hawkwatching season is here!  Freeport Wild Bird Supply (FWBS) will once again be partnering with Leica Sport Optics to sponsor the Spring Hawkwatch at Bradbury Mountain State Park in Pownal, beginning on Tuesday.  2016 marks the tenth consecutive season for this project through which valuable data is collected while providing an enjoyable and educational experience for visitors.

This year, we welcome Anna Stunkel as our official Hawkcounter. Anna spent the previous two falls working as a hawkcounter and educator with Intermountain Bird Observatory in Idaho . Her hawkwatch resume also includes time at Golden Gate Raptor Observatory in California . Her Maine ties include receiving her Bachelor's degree from College of the Atlantic and working as a seabird colony monitor on Petit Manan Island.

Our early spring has resulted in considerable movement of raptors and vultures already, in stark contrast to last year where the very late winter resulted in almost no northbound migration prior to the count's start. The good news is we'll have raptors to watch on Day 1, and the trail to the summit is already ice-free!  Unfortunately, we undoubtedly missed many migrants already, and with local birds on territory, Anna will be working hard to decipher true migrants from the "locals."

The count begins on Tuesday, weather permitting, and will run seven days a week (weather permitting) until May 15th, from 9-5 daily.

For a summary of last year's count, you can check out my blog entry here:

We look forward to seeing you up at The Brad, and don't forget to mark your calendars for Feathers Over Freeport: A Birdwatching Weekend on Saturday, April 30th and Sunday, May 1st. Our 2016 schedule of events will be posted soon.
