We headed up to Long Falls Dam Road on Thursday when it became clear we would miss the Sunday August Bird Club trip. We arrived at the road about 10:15. Single digit temps plus WNW wind gave sub zero wind chill feeling and kept birds in shelter. We saw 5 red crossbills total at 3 sites but heard more in dense cover. A real good look at a male at the power pole marked 13. Five siskins in 2 spots (one being the feeders at the house w birches near Old County Road). One purple finch male there as well. A lone ruffed grouse crept across Old County Rd about halfway in. A few red breasted and white breasted nuthatches, hairy woodpeckers. Other than that, goldfinches near feeders and chickadees in the woods ruled the day. We did not use any tapes. The day seemed too stressful as it was.
