Visitors:
9 people visited the hawkwatch.

Weather:
Fog socked in the mountain this morning, delaying the count until 9:30 am EST. For the first hour distant fog continued to impact visibility, and migration was relatively slow during this period. However, after this first hour hawkwatching conditions became excellent. Visibility cleared up nicely and cloud cover eventually broke up a bit. There was a light breeze from the south/southwest for most of the day, which is an ideal wind direction for raptor migration. During midday these optimal conditions made for a great day of hawkwatching with high numbers for mid-March. During the last hour, some fog rolled in again, and a nearby thunderstorm brought some drizzle which slowed down the count.

Raptor Observations:
Many red-tails and a good number of red-shoulders were moving through today. The majority of these birds followed flight paths that allowed nice, close views from the mountain. Some flew directly overhead, while others flew along the mountainside, mainly to the east. Turkey Vultures and Bald Eagles also put in a good showing today, along with a few accipiters.

Non-raptor Observations:
Many Canada Geese (a total of 537) and blackbirds were moving through today. These geese kept us busy and continued migrating despite the foggy/cloudy morning weather. A White-winged Crossbill was also heard passing by in the morning. We enjoyed the first visit of the year from "Hawkwatch Junco" today, and heard the resident Barred Owl calling. Species deemed migrating:
537 Canada Geese
89 blackbird sp.
71 Common Grackles
65 American Robins
40 American Crows
17 Common Mergansers
15 passerine sp.
6 Mallards
3 duck sp.
2 Pine Siskins
1 Killdeer
1 White-winged Crossbill

Predictions:
A cold front is expected to move through tomorrow, potentially bringing scattered showers especially during midday. Winds are predicted to be WNW. These conditions may cause a slightly slower day for hawkwatching. However, periods of fair weather may bring a few pulses of migrants, especially if we have some sun.
