Weather:
The day started out overcast with temps hanging right at 40 degrees F. Winds from the E and ESE were a nuisance, along with drizzle. The visibility was very good though as a result of little to no direct sun. By late morning the winds started to calm and we hit a dry spell for a little while. By the halfway point in our day a larger patch of rain closed in on us from the W and produced heavier and steady rain, which in turn washed us out for the remainder of the day.
Raptor Observations:
It was a slow start to the day without much movement. As the first passing showers came through I had started to doubt that we would see much of a flight ahead of the storm but during the second lull we were rewarded by a fun flight, with a lot of birds passing directly over the summit, including our first Broad-wing of the season. Birds remained low and under their own power as they were all making more of an effort to stay aloft and maintain forward momentum, without the help of the sun.
Non-raptor Observations:
I really thought there would be a bigger flight of blackbirds and others during the morning. The surrounding area seemed alive with song, including some new arrivals for the season, and Grackles had been flying overhead while out for a walk around sunrise. Unfortunately only a handful of birds were on the move by the time I arrived at the summit. northbound birds include: 59 Common Grackles 20 Canada Geese 7 Brown-headed Cowbirds 5 Great Blue Herons 4 Red-winged Blackbirds 1 Tree Swallow 1 Double Crested Cormorant 1 FOY Barn Swallow 1 Killdeer 1 Belted Kingfisher 1 American Robin
Predictions:
Precipitation potential for tomorrow morning is around 25% at the moment, so there is a chance I'll be up for a little while before the heavier stuff starts falling again. We'll see. Temps in the mid 40s with a ENE breeze and cloudy skies sound very welcoming. Don't rush out the door tomorrow because I might not be there, although that may be more of an incentive go, I won't take offense.
